Taking Pictures of Fish

Hi All,

For work Rod and I are starting on, I am thinking it would be cool/better to have some sort of small tank filled with sea water to hold the fish (i.e. flounder, sea bass, blue, etc.) while we are taking pictures.

What I am trying to solve?

1. I don't want people or objects in the picture if it can be avoided as they pictures will be used for identification of species type pictures.

2. It would be nice for them not to be lying on a board ... it will be harder to shoot the pictures but in the water seems better.

3. Catch and Release - we don't want these fish stressed or injured anymore than they already are.

Any ideas?

Hi Ed,

I have not shot many shots of aquarium type stages but the thing I wopuld be concerned with is thre reflection off the glass.  If you had a dark colored hood surrounding the plain you are shooting in and the light source from another plain except directly in front of the lens it should work.

Talk to hareball he has taken many aquarium shots and even had a few published.

Hi Paul,

I have been thinking about this for some time now. I am exactly concerned with wha you are saying. Add to that the available space (I only plan to shoot on the center console) and this magnifies the problem.

It almost seems easire to shoot them in the water on SCUBA.

I will definitely enlist your help for this and the video.

The things I am working on:

1. Platform for shooting fish.
2. Video equipment for "How-to" videos for the site.
3. On water, "real-time" web cam feeds and streaming playbacks.
4. Compiling articles such as yours in a book.
5. Children's fishing related hard copy and electronic coloring book.

This is all very ambitious and will take years to get right but we are on our way.

Hi Ed,

Anything I can do to help. 

I have some equipment such as a very good camera for digital video's.  It will do just fine out in the field as well as in small studio locations.  I also have a set of hot lights that can be used for small studio work like shooting How-To's.  In fact I have been toying with the idea of doing some and seeing how they fly.

Have you thought of doing your report on video? lets give it a try.  It would be cool giving you report while on your boat at the dock to start with.

let me know if I can do anything to help. i've taken thousands of photos of fish in aquariums for both hobbyests and biologists and have many tanks collecting dust. 

we could set up biotope tanks and possibly order juvie species through a supplier but not sure how available our local species might be. I have endless freshwater connections and just a few for marine species.
