question about rigging a jig...
« on: November 28, 2011, 09:39:53 PM »
so how do you guys rig a jig (let's say an ava jig) to your line? do you use a snap swivel or just tie onto the line directly? talking about jigging for stripers.

I've been tying a 50lb mono leader to my braid line with a barrel swivel and then attaching a snap swivel to the end of the leader and attaching the jig to it. I am wondering if that is less effective than tying the jig to the leader directly?

The snap swivel makes it easy to change jigs but does it spook the fish?

I put a swivel to my power pro, then clip my jig.  sometimes I will put a mono leader on the jig.  Mono leader will prevent the jig from getting caught up in itself when parallel jigging.

I just tie a Berkley Croslock or a Duolock snap to my leader.  My leader is usually 40 or 50 lb mono.  Although, I will use anywhere from 20 to 80 lb mono or fluorocarbon depending on conditions.

I tie my jig directly to the mono. I make a 3 ~ 4ft loop with the spider hitch. Then I pass the loop through the jigs eye/ring and tie it off with an improved clinch knot. This way I have a double line incase I get nicked up by some blues.

On my conventional gear I use floro leader (20-50lb test) tied with either an albright or a uni-knot.  Then I tie on the jig directly with a uni or improved clinch knot.  On spinning gear I have a short leader with a duo-lock snap and barrel swivel.

whs.
I also use a swivel between the mainline and leader t^.          If the blues are around I have small wire leaders too.
