Black Smoke coming from a cummins 540 qsc seris
« on: July 09, 2009, 08:02:43 AM »
Running home from fishing and noticed from the port engine black/brown exhaust haze....throttled down and took a look engine was vibrating and had a smell of burning rubber ( motor mounts?)....started to steam with a sweet smell...temp ran up to 186 and cam back down to normal range about 174. Shut down the engine and limped home... total hours are 335... the port transom was badly sooted on the port side only. Checked the overflow tank and all of the coolant was gone. Any ideas what it could be ????...All service guys in New Jersey are tied up for a few weeks !! Also after the disel was burning like crazy it started to puff out white somke that smelled like antifreeze. The cummins 540 neverleaves a smoke trail so i was caught by suprise when this happned

 Might be a head gasket.

I've been told that sometimes when a diesel smokes white exhaust it could be the turbo gone bad.

the diesiel mechanic came to my house this morning to just do a report and he said it was a injector, but that doesnt explain the white smoke wich smells like anti freeze. i believe the mechanic had no idea.

Check the top of the dipstick for signs of coolant. See if the coolant went into the oil. Also check for puffing from the the oil fill or the dipstick tube.
What year is the engine?

the engines are 2007. the mechanic said the white smoke is unburned deiseel and that the piston is not working. but that still doesnt explain why the antifreeze is low and also deisel burns black or brown not white.

black smoke is fuel problem does the engine have a turbo charger on it
white smoke is probally your coolant being pushed out exhaust sounds to me it's a head gasket if coolant tank was empty

I know diesel should burn brown/black, but I have a 2008 F250 that goes through the whole regeneration process, pouring fuel into the exhaust the burn out the Diesel Particulate Filter.  When it's in this stage the truck is pouring white smoke.  It makes me wonder since it's technically just excess fuel being burned.
