We all have a lot of money invested in rods, reels, lures and other gear that can be effected by water, salt, dirt and the like. I thought I did a pretty good job cleaning and “winterizing” my equipment this year, as I did not have to race to beat the cold weather, unlike other fishing seasons.
I had done some work on a shed where I store most of my equipment. I decided to check the interior of the shed to make sure all my repairs were holding up. The shed was fine but to my surprise I found something distressing. When I looked at one of the reels, a Penn 975, I was shocked to see salt buildup on the stainless screws. This was not just the dreaded green coloration, but an actual buildup of salt...
After scratching my head how this could have happened, I cleaned the area, re-applied a healthy dose of lube and sprayed the entire reel with WD40 again.
I am not sure how or why this happened. All I know is that I will be checking in on my equipment every week or so from now on.
Don’t wait to be surprised. Spend a few moments now looking at your “winterized” equipment. The few moments you spend now may save you some money and time when the spring comes around.
