Spark Plug Question
« on: February 08, 2009, 10:32:01 PM »
I drew a blank with this one, I used to know the answer.  I have an 175 Evinrude for starters.  Turning the spark plug, if I am not mistaked, the fork of the plug has to be facing a certain way when fully on.  Actually, I think the fork can't face a certain way on the cylinder when fully on, which means you have a 1/4 chance of being wrong.  I just can't remember the rule on it.

I am not so sure about the older ones but the E-Tecs need the electrode within so many degrees of the fuel injector.  Depending on who put the old plugs in you should see a magic marker line on the porcelain that marks the electrode so you know if it is indexed properly or not once the plug is installed.  If it does not line up they recommned trying it in another cylinder to get the proper indexing.

I don't think this applys to older 2 stroke engines but I did read that plugs have to be put in a certain way on the newer engines not sure if it was the Fitch or E-tech model.

OK old post but good info here

AND for STILL RUNNING--Should have said Spark plugs rofla

To answer the post it is called indexing-And this works well on any engine--The video is by a non-sponsor -but great info-from Evinrude--Just keep in mind that if your plug is firing towards the cylinder wall it wont give you full combustion.
