But you can see the channel on th display? if no static its probably not the ant. did you check that the ant didnt pop out of the back ??

That should make a "squelch" even if the antenna not hooked up. how old is the unti??

Might just want to replace it unless it's an easy fix like a speaker or speaker wire off. The West Marine DHC radio is pretty nice and not too bad on the wallet. $109 I think.

t^ thanks all,  I never though of the speaker. The weird thing is when I first turn it on it works for awhile then nothing. The radio has power shows the channel but seems like it is not receiving or transmitting. I was thinking this morning since i only run (1) battery if maybe it's not getting enough juice? I also run my fish finder at the same time.

Give us a little bit more info. Make model and age and is it exposed or protected, and what make and model ant are you using as well.
My first order of business is to check voltage at the radio. Check all power connections as well.  Also check the transmit circuit on 1 and 25 watts. I have seen this issue a couple of times. As far as receiving, you will still get squelch static with no antenna connected. I rarely see a transmit and receive problem at the same time unless the radio is totally shot.
Standard and Icom are my only choices for radios. No Unidens or Cobras or store brand radios.

Like I said and Matt attested to if your not hearing anything its probably not the antenna. You would still get a squelch and static. If the lights are on its probably not a power problem but it still could be. if you dont have a volt meter run a + right from the battery to the radio and see if you get sound, if not its probably gonna be the speaker. It may work when you first put it on then not later because of it getting hotter out the heat will make things expand sometime just enough to make a bad connection.

GOOD point EDDIE--some older units will not have sound unless the Mike is plugged in and working properly

But as he said if it works for a while and shuts off---finals--I.E. output is shot   5hrug
