Opening Day Flounder Tips Please
« on: May 02, 2012, 09:24:23 AM »
Hello,

I am planning on starting my 2012 on opening day Sat May 5th for a half day trip for fluke out of Point Pleasant. Any early season advise on rigs or baits would be appreciated. My youngest (6 years old) will coming out for his first boat trip and I'd hate to see him get the skunk.

Thanks for your time

Chris

Fish the Manasquan River. Small spro tip with bait (Squid or Spearing). Keep it bouncing and work the edges.

opening weekend is tough no one has them dialed in yet small bait lots of action
Its better to sit in a boat and think about God, than to sit in a church and think about fishing.

it's still early and the water's still a bit chilly for full-on flatty boom batties

bounce a white or yellow bucktail tipped with a nice long 1/2" wide squid strip- or some a dat Glup stuff

try a trailer hook on da BT to grab those short hits

tie a teaser hook on a short dropper and run that 24-36" above the sinker/BT- you'd be amazed at how many fish hit the teaser.

Killies will suffice as bait or a bucktail sweetner, but some sharpies try to pick up some bluefish strips, mackeral strips, or even salmon bellies (you didnt hear that last one from me... ;))

Thank you all for the tips I already called the local bait shop and they said they will have mini's and I have plenty of gulp already too. Hopefully we'll get something to bite knowing my luck the skate is already there waiting for me  fcp

Thanks

my sons eight and I just rig up a hi-low rig with killie/squid on top and a smaller jig on the bottom with squid strip.   I put twenty pound braid on 5' light action ugly stick.  He'll get robins, skate, and fluke but on that gear he has a blast trying to pull those in.  the braid helps cause he doesn't quite understand the concept of tiring the thing out...he just wants to reel reel and reel some more with the rod bent at 180 degrees.  good times clp clp

good luck.

This early in the season I would stick to the rivers using the small jig setups described by the others.  Good Luck this weekend.
