DIYS Rod Making
« on: May 02, 2012, 04:47:58 PM »
How many are active Rod makers here. I have done a few and it takes time and patience and a touch of skill. I was self taught from the world wide web. and a few books. I would pick up old Rods at Flea markets and such. Strip them down and sand the blanks. Taking note of the guide placement and the back bone of the rod. I then would order what I needed or go to a shop in Manasquan to hand pick what I wanted. From Butt section, Seat. and guides.
plus any materials I might need such as thread or epoxy's. All of my equipment like guide stands. Vise motor and thread holders where home made. I used a windshield wiper motor yes 12 volt to turn the rods. had to remove the return switch form the motor so it revolved 360. I have done a few rods for myself but have repaired many for free  thud for others, That's just me. I will post some photos if there is any interest in this post, I have a few motors left up for grabs and possibly my whole set up. for trade. fishing trip. or someone serious about starting up.  I just posted my Fly tying stuff in the classified section. So lets hear whats going on.Bill

I'd be interested in seeing some pics. Rod building is something I have wanted to try but can't seem to find (make) the time to do it. Probably cause I am a little too impatient for it.  5hrug Perhaps one of these days...

I have made a few myself and tied for a short time at the Mud Hole when it use to be in NJ.  There are a few good tiers around but, there is nothing like catching a nice size fish on a custom built rod you built yourself.  I have given most of mine away but keep a 9' 9wt fly rod that I will not give up and a reworked rod I built for my daughter.

I would like to see your work as well.

Happy Catching
