Me and my buddy had our opening day of flukin yesterday. Started out drifting near the #1 bouy at the tip of sandy hook around 6:30am. I was using a ball jig/chart gulp 6" mullet with a teaser of squid strips about 12" up the line. Buddy was using the old killy/squid combo. He lands the first fluke (19"). I lose the first bet and owe him the coffee for the ride home. Drift a few more times and I get a 20" fluke on my teaser. By then area is getting to crowded for my little boat and head over to drift across the channel at the top of the navy pier. Just after I drop my line in the water the fish finder explodes with fish on the screen....feel a bite....then realized the blues cut off all my terminal tackle. grab my other rod cut up my bunker and drop down to 25'...nailed within minutes. blue on the line with a nice fight. buddy is still fishin for fluke and pulls in another 20" fluke. After having motor issues and coming back out around 12:30 in afternoon we head back out to #1 bouy again. real fast drift, 10-12oz needed just to hold bottom. Not much there so head over to the southern end of flynns knoll. Fishfinder goes nuts again and we start throwing jigs. I hook into a blue. then few min later my other rods bends with the bunker and reel that one in. all a good fight and fun time reelin in. decided to head back to #1 bouy for one more drift. I tie on my hi-low with 10oz weight with 6" chart gulps. I land a 21" fluke. I win second bet for biggest fluke and get my dinner paid for!!
So for the day only got four fluke but all where keepers and also three blues mixed in. And I now realize why everyone gets annoyed at the bluefish! all in all great day on the water for us and a good start to the season.
