important pretrip suggestion
« on: June 24, 2012, 07:33:35 PM »
not sure where to post this up,, so here it goes.

on the way out this am, there was a call to the coast guard from a vessel midshore, the capt was down and having seizures.

when asked his position, the buddy and or fare making the call had no clue, didn't know how to work the electronics.

turns out the capt started coming back around, and i guess they got it all figured out,,, could have been way worse.

so my suggestion is to take an extra 5 minutes,, because you are going over safety procedures right?? and show your crew what todo to get a fixed position on the gps.

you know what todo for your crew, but does your crew know what todo for you?

come to think of it, i'm going to type something out and tape it to the gps cover. its always sitting right there anyway.

All your tuna's are belong to me

I have a card taped to the radio with emergency instructions and phone numbers.  I also make sure crew for the day can read the GPS and know how to start the engine.

Its better to sit in a boat and think about God, than to sit in a church and think about fishing.

This is an easy fix for a lot of VHF radios equipped with MMSI (is that it?). Most that I have seen include a 'distress' button. Of course this requries the VHF to have an active code assigned. Fred
