If you’re planning to be out on the water this weekend, make sure you check out the weather and water conditions here. This weekend should be nice, even though temperatures will be hot. The water will provide some relief from the excessive heat inland, but you might just have to take a dip or get in the A/C to really cool off. You will also have a good breeze to help with the heat. I know there won’t be a lack of boats fishing or cruising the waters around NJ, so I know the forecast for excessive heat won’t deter most. Despite lighter winds across almost all of the waters, water conditions will not be the best, with small choppy wind waves across most of the inshore waters. Offshore won’t be the best either, with Saturday under “Cautious Conditions” in the afternoon hours. So, staying in the bays or close to the coast may be the best bet for your fishing and boating plans this weekend.

Saturday & Sunday- High pressure is dominant over the region bringing with it higher than normal temperatures and higher humidity. A cold front, if not already in the area by Friday overnight will move in during Saturday and stall out over the area through the beginning of the week. This could bring a slight chance of scattered showers and even a thunderstorm, however nothing is widespread. Skies will be mostly sunny on Saturday with clouds building Saturday Night into Sunday, making it partly cloudy. High temperatures well inland in urbanized areas for both days could see triple digits with heat indices certainly in the 100’s and lows only into the mid and low 70’s. High temperatures for the rest of the state will be mid 90’s with upper 90’s in southern NJ. Heat indices could certainly reach the 100’s in these areas. Overnight lows in the upper 60’s and low 70’s. Along the immediate coast and on the water will see slightly lower temperatures in the mid to upper 80’s with lows in the low 70’s. Sunday could be slightly cooler along the immediate coast and on the water.

As I mentioned on Wednesday, there was a chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms for Saturday. This is due to the high temperatures and humidity across the region, as well as an approaching cold front that is going to stall out. This chance of storms has increased and the Storm Prediction Center has issued a Slight Risk of severe thunderstorms. The main threat will be damaging winds and hail. These storms will not be widespread, but scattered and/or isolated mostly in the afternoon and evening. These storms will fire quickly and in the right conditions will intensify rapidly. We also have a chance of more organized, larger storms to move into NJ from other areas.

Anyone venturing out to go fishing or boating, needs to keep this in mind. Even a regular thunderstorm could produce 40+mph winds and a severe warned thunderstorm has minimum winds of 58mph, with frequent and dangerous cloud to ground lightning and the threat of hail. Storms can intensify as they approach the coast or get out over open waters.
