brown sharks
« on: July 16, 2012, 04:21:09 PM »
Anyone know if the brown sharks are being caught on the surf like in sandy hook. Every yr I go out at night just to catch one but I'm never able to. I use macerall now so I figured it would be a better bait since its so oily. Any help I would appreciate.

Make sure you use fresh bait. If you toss out a full mackerel or bunker I would puncture it a bunch of times so it bleeds out. Change it up every so often. Kinda hard to chum off the beach but if you cut up or grind small pieces of bunker or something nice and juicy that might help.
Goodluck!

Doesn't seem like a great idea to start chumming the beaches while shark fishing. Seems like it could be problematic for fisherman and beach access altogether if something like that becomes widespread.

Yes True you have a valid point but most fisherman shark at night when no one is around. Plus the change of tides and other fish or crabs that may be around will consume anything left over. No different than a bluefish blitz tearing up a pod of bunks. Its a big ocean. =)

Some municipalities and states have banned either chumming or shark fishing from their beaches.  However, I am not aware of any such ban in NJ.

I know, I'm not saying that there are no sharks or fish in the ocean. The point i was trying to make was that all it may take is for some up tight a-hole to get a toe bit off and people will start looking for reasons to blame fisherman. I can see the headlines now ..."Shark fisherman chumming the beaches are attracting sharks"

I personally don't have a problem with chumming the beaches, but Im sure a lot of people would

I would stick with a fat bunker chunk, cut off the tail and head.  You can definitely chum off the beach.  I'd go to the local fish store and get whatever scraps you can and chunk/chum them off the beach.  I used to bring a 2x4 to smash the mussels along the jetty to attract black fish and sea bass.  I always chuck my "clam parts" in the ocean when I'm bassin.

Just don't start chummin between the swimming flags and you'll be fine.

Good luck! Those brown sharks are out there and they are fun to catch and release!

I would go south for consistent sharks and big rays. And fresh bait is definitly preferred. Heavy gear and keep your drag loose if you spike the rod. I've caught them north of manasquan but seems there is much better action on ibsp and lbi from what I hear
