Crimps vs Knots
« on: September 01, 2012, 02:23:46 PM »
Been throwing around the idea of tying some sword rigs as opposed to the usual crimp method.

I've crimped, hate the results and dont trust myself.

Started off with 150lb Jinkai and a clinch knot.  Pleased with the results so far.

Will be adding more turns to the knot, then move up to 200 then eventually 250 lb leader to see what I wind up with.

Need to find a mono friendly lube as plain old spit just isnt cutting it with this heavy leader.

Just trying to think outside the box and try something new.  Thoughts?

How about vegetable oil?

Are you bringing those on the Sea Devil?

Duff

will get back in a few--

I use the Jinkai as well and have no problems--With 150 to 300 mono I crimp all and works well. Will post picks--shoot an email and can go over it with you

Gotta ck the Grill

Try a Palomar knot...you'll have two pieces of line through the hook eye instead of one...More strength t^

Heres how I crimp

300 lb. Jinkai
The first 2 crimps are right and the third wrong--Have to crimp the center of the sleeve--That third one crushes the line

If you notice the tag end--I melt it down to form a ball to stop any sliding.

Have you considered snelling the hook.  I have done this using up to 200lb leader using a dubro snelling tool.

Here is a shot of a hook I snelled with 150lb.

Like the tag end idea.

Will be messing with the Palomar and Snell this week, we'll see how that goes.

One thing I did notice with the crimps was the inconsistency of the breaking strength.  After crimping, I have used a digital scale and pulled  to see when the crimp would fail. They broke at all different pressures.  Tested knots in the same manner and always found they break within a small window.

Bottom line is I either have perfect my crimping, get someone else to do it for me, or learn to tie some good knots!!!.... ;D

So did a little messing around again today.

Did the Palomar, and gotta say I love it.  Simple, strong and tightened down with minimal effort using veg oil drops.Use the knot ALLTHETIME with tuna chunk rigs, never came into my head to try it on the heavy stuff (thanks Kenny and BT for the ideas).

Again used 150 Jinkai clear.  As in original post, will move up to 200 then 250 and see how it goes.

Will keep messing with it along with the crimping...learning process.  Should be putting all this to the real test in the next week with a run to the edge.

I would not use oil or silicon spray or WD40 on your knots...good ol H2O ( Spit ) for me...the water will dry...the oil will stay and perhaps help in pulling out the knot during a long battle with a big fish....

maybe I'm wrong and not trying to start an argument...let's call it a constructive discussion ;)

but if your knot is tied properly shouldn't it not slip anyway no matter if there is any type of lubricant on it whatsoever? :headscra:

Because they are basically overhand knots, Palomar knots don't usually slip.  A Clinch knot, which is several wrapped loops around a standing line with the tag end locked down, can easily slip if not tied correctly.
