I used to bring the guts from different catches into a professor of mine while in college. This class was an ecology class (1 and 2) but the professor did lots of research on parasitic worms. I think we found a nematode or Trematoda or some kind of worm in just about every type of fish I brought in to him. Killies were always the worst followed by striped bass as far as diversity and actual numbers of worms. Grossed me out a bit at first but came to finally realize that most fish carry some sort of parasite, always have always will. Kind of like ticks on a deer. Next time you catch a snapper, look for the giant isopods sucking the blood out of there gills. Very common with bluefish for some reason. The thing that now scares me about fish isn't the worms but the different bacterial infections one could pick up from a cut by a fish, like the mycobacterium that cause the ugly red sores on stripers.
