OVERNIGHT CANYON REPORT
« on: October 08, 2012, 06:48:40 PM »
Friday, the crew of the “North Cote” broke GE inlet at 930am aboard “Chance” Scotty’s 38 Henriks, we started on a course of 130 degrees , Carteret Canyon.  We stopped short at the 100 line with a full trolling spread out.

About an hour in the center long started screaming, with a little finesse we were able to set the j hook on Mr. White.  After getting some good videos and pics the release was clean and swift.   He hit a 3oz black / purple sea witch.

We continued east towards the 500 and readied the pit for the chunk bite, as the captain positioned the boat for the drift we set 4 tuna line 2 with sardines and 2 with live spot.  b/c of the drift we were only able to set one sword line with a large squid around 150 feet .  The bite was steady b/t 9pm and midnight going 5 -5 on 75 – 80# yft’s .

With most of the crew getting a few hours of sleep for the 4am bite we heard so much about, it was on greg and I to keep this bite going.    At this point we were beyond 500 fathoms so we decided to make a move, I put us over a nice piece of structure that went from 850 to 1200 ft.  The rain was steady and the wind started picking up from 5 to 10 kts,  around 1000 ft give or take the 50 started screaming, after setting the hook greg found himself fighting his first sword, with just the two of us up I grabbed the gaff and put’er in the boat.  It was definitely a big moment for the two of us having gone 0-4 in the past on swordfish.
We took our time collaring the sword and yft trying to get as much ice on them as we could freeing up space for any fish to come for the morning bite.

5am came quick and we found ourselves struggling to put another fish on ice.   it never turned back on for us , sounded like the boats south of us had a morning fury of tuna come through around 430 5 am.

With the wind picking up out the SE we waited till first light and headed for the bell.   We had a great crew and a good trip the next weather window we’ll be out and at it again

Its better to sit in a boat and think about God, than to sit in a church and think about fishing.

I think its the depth i noticed on the last 2 overnight trips the bite happened around 1400ft , you have to stay in 73 + water temp  , but idk i learn new things about these fish each trip
