Rod/Reel Question

Hi gang,

Broke my wrist getting onto a party boat a couple of weeks ago, and out of commission for awhile. While I await recovery, I've been daydreaming about getting my first conventional setup for winter bottom fishing!

Have decided on the Penn Fathom 40 Star Drag (no level wind) and want to pair it with an Ugly Stick Tiger Light (BWCJL2200510 or BWCJL220063). But then I read somewhere that the Fathom doesn't thread onto these rods. (!?)  Really???

Anyone have any thoughts?

Strange.  Unless it has a really wide reel foot I can't see why it wouldn't fit.  

I'm not at work now.  I think we sell the Fathom, but I'm not sure about the 40.  If I remember, the next time I work I will check it out for you.

I'm not a big fan of the Ugly Stick..... If your going with a Penn Fathom then maybe just stay with the Penn Rod.....

But I would recommend that you go to shops and check out what feels right for you and your budget.

We didn't have the Penn Fathom 40 in stock.  But, we did have a Fathom 30, and I can confirm what you read.  This reel does not fit on the Shakespeare Ugly Stik Tiger rods.  However, it does fit on a standard black Ugly Stik.

Why this is I can't imagine.  What makes it even stranger is that Penn and Shakespeare are two brand names of the same company.
