Fly Fishing Is the Subject Temporary Home
« on: January 28, 2013, 04:07:32 PM »
t^ This is a temporary Home for this, Link If enough members use it HotRod said it will become apart of its Own.
To start I tie Salt water Flies 99% fresh water ones are to hard and are very cheap on Line.I do mostly Clousers. Streames, Buck Tails Candys, Creace flys. My Tackle is from 4 wt to 10 wt. assotred lines, and leaders. I do not use S/S hooks since the Flys do not last that long.
I fish Boat, bank , Beach (surf) Always will to help, share, teach , anyone interested in starting or in need of direction, I am not a Pro. but have fished from Fla. To Alaska. over many years with The fly rods ( Long Poles ), I tend to keep everything very simple and mindfull of cost. I fished with many that spend 10 times what i do and never found the need to go $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ on any stuff. So be you beginer or been doing it for some time please join in. Ask questions and share with others.

Well, let see I have been fly fishing for 40 years and you always are learning. I mostly used the fly rod only for trout but have in recent years expanded into salt water. Bill says streamers, and two of my favorites are Lefty's deceiver and the Gartside soft hackled streamer.  You can imitate just about any bait fish with these two patterns by varying the colors or size. I like the soft hackled streamer for imitating bay anchovies. I tie all of my flies that I use from size 22 trout to 3/0 for stripers.  I am no expert either but I sure I could help with questions.

Like you guys I am no expert but have been tying salt water streamers and teasers for over 50 years.  My tying station now is geared down to my desk I do my computing on so it is extremely limited showing you do not need tons of space ti tie.  In fact if you are going to just tie saltwater and want a nice and neat package go to one of the mart stores and pick up couple of the see through multi draw (I have 2, 3 draw)units that stack.  These units fit all my materials like deer hair in multi colors  and other materials to add zip to your artificials.

My vice is a Cabelas deluxe model that I think costs all of 45 bucks.  It comes with all tools that is necessary to tie just about anything except the materials for tying.

There are not to many places around that sell material anymore.  Betty & Nicks had a nice supply but since Sandy knocked them out for a while I have to go into Brielle to replenish my supplies.

The important thing to remember is to make sure your vice will accept the size hooks you will be using.  I usually tie only from 2/0 to 6/0 so it is simple for me.  If you will be tying smaller flies for fresh water make sure the chucks will hold them snugly. Plus if you are using hooks above 6/0 make sure the chucks open up wide enough to handle them.

Tying can become addicting and is very relaxing.  I tend to tie too many so as I love to teach newcomers and I tend give away a lot of teasers during a course of a season.

Another thing to remember is to try and remember all the colors you use to catch fish during the summer as the baits that swim through have their own unique color patterns.  Try to mimic that pattern and you can't loose.

Well that's my .02 for now I hope that this will be an ongoing forum as many guys would like to try tying but have no place to go for info.

Like my fellow anglers before me said don't be afraid to ask questions.  If you think it is dumb I bet there are at least 3 other guys out there that were wondering the same thing.  With that said, if you really don't want to ask on the forum PM anyone of us and your question will be, I'm sure will be answered.

Happy Catching

Paul

Talk about a big step forward, tow heavey hitters have come forward. Thanks. I will gather many photos for show and tell. As far as matterails go The Fly Hatch Red Bank Now long gone. but there are many online that any and all one would need. I scored a lot last year and traded from as far as Montana for some. I will list many on line sourses if that is ok. with the Managment since they do not have them on this site. I can Host 4 people at my home shop soon, I will start with Rods and reels. and work from there By the time the season starts many will be ready to give it a try.
Right Now my Computer system is 90% down with Opitimum coming tomorrow to redo it ALL from the street to the Modem. Thanks Reckless but the system crashed. Some of the Photos I have posted before but will repeat them.  As PED579 ( Paul ) said you do not need a big outfit to get involved. There are many tricks and short cuts on building and Tying Flys. And the matterials used.
And many of the Clausers and such can be used as Teasers when Fluke, Striper, Blue, and bait fishing of any style. so don't be on the side lines join in. Bill

well decided to jump head first into some fly tying.  bought a good vice, some bobbins, scissors, hackle pliers, etc.  Took a trip to effingers and bought some materials as well as obtain some of my own from around home. been doing the you tube thing watching some guys tie flys and the like.

the question I have, or what I would like discussed in a thread, specifically where to begin.  There is mono filament, wire, 6/0, 8/0...it was enough to make my head spin...then you get into colors of each type.  Is there a simple "go-to" multi purpose thread or does each type of its own unique uses.  any insight or feedback is of course appreciated!!

Yep Dam your Good, Bill
DJ76 After you get the hang of it many things will change as short cts are found and made, I am BY Far no purest when it comes to by the book, What I call the under wrap I use what is surplus thread the Color over wraps are more to taste and in keeping true to what your tying, I do not use any Mono for any part of the Fly. I just do not care for it head cement works better on thread, There are many Dia. # threads The thin ones are fresh water. I have many sizes and typs , but use only a few, My Hook wrap is what ever. I use Lead Thread 2 sizes if I want a sinking fly. Do not go wild with matterials pick out a few styles of Flys I would start with a Streamer. go to Clauser. Take your time go slow enjoy it, Tye tight neat Trim lastly. There is so much on line and places to get what you need. you will have way more then you need Trading is Fun. Like when a bunch group gets togeather and sends in say 8 different flys. then they are sorted and sent out to the members that joined in. Thats latter. I should get in my shop by this weekend. photos to follow. Bill

For myself I use Mono in Fine.  I like he way it ties and when I use the UV Sense head coating the mono disappears and takes on the colors that are under it.

Only my .02

I like mono thread on certain patterns. I find it is easier to tie buck tail in if you want the BT to go around the hook shank but you do not want it to flare out.
As an example the Buck tail deceiver pattern is one I use mono thread on. Thanks Bill I tie a clam fly that is similar to that. I will see if I can get some tying videos made up to post here

Here ar some photos I just did. Talk about a Clam fly. The vises are what I use nothing out of the Box so to speak. Home made bases. and yes a pair of Vise grips used to have one that I Brazed to a Rod that fit one of the bases. used for off shore trolling Flys, The Flys shown are most of what I tie. I do not care for the Crease Flys anymore. Same for the profile flash ones.  The sleeves work out good to store, must of gave away 100 or better last year. Now Guys ask for a certain one no wasted Time or Materails. I lot of Fishing People I meet on The beaches I give them Clausers and streamers to use as a teaser. Killers Most ask How musch are they can I have a dozen My reply there free when I am there one at a time. Enjoy the photos More to come If I am stuck in this weekend I will set up all my stuff as now My 6 years old grandson wants to learn, ( Child Labor )  fcp Oh about the Cement GLUE Adhesive uased many I like one kalled ZAP A GAP best but the Glue also works as for the glue gun its my 3 one works great for head and wrap. The Motors are windshield wiper motors, converted to turn the Rods during epoxy drying The RPM it just right More on that later if anyone is interested I have I think 3 unmounted motors left not converted But thats no problem. !12 Volt.

Notice the Pink one I will have a custom one for Trish named after her  msfsh msfsh
