Metal Detectors
« on: January 31, 2013, 07:17:37 PM »
Any of you guy's have em....what do you have..where do you hunt...I'm thinking of buying one just to mess around with on the beach. I'm not looking to spend a lot of money on one. Just an entry level machine to play around with. Anyone have one they want to sell ?
Tell me about some of your finds with them.

Just make sure that the beaches you are hunting on allows them after the storm.  IBSP does not allow them for now.  I don't know if they will lift that restriction later or not but I have a feeling it will be for a while.

I believe it is because so many people lost so much they will be raking the beaches to see if any personal property come up to the surface after time.

Paul, I believe they shut the beaches down more because the authorities are afraid that unspent ordinances may have washed up during the storm. When they did the beach restoration last year there were a lot of ordinances pumped onto the beaches and they closed them for that reason then.

Mike, I own several White's detectors. They rate right at the top a far as detectors go. I don't remember the model numbers but they are older ones. Newer ones are much lighter than the ones that I have, but I don't feel they work any better.

Do yourself a big favor and get a detector that is more toward the middle of the road or above in the price range. If you buy something at the entry level, you won't be happy with it. Plan on spending several hundred dollars on a decent one. Check used. You can get some good deals on them as it is an activity that some people will get into but loose interest in after a period of time and then want to off load their equipment.

If you can find old towns that are no longer in existance you can find very old coins and jewelry. School yards are also good spots to hunt. The older the better. Kids will use swing sets, jungle gyms, etc. and drop change out of their pockets. People think, gee, how much $$$ can a kid have on him to make it worth looking there? Keep in mind, if it is an old playground or school yard, the coins from the 50s and 60s were silver and are now worth much more than face value.

Old swimming holes are great places to hunt also.

Keep in mind, MOST places have been gone over many times by many people.

I have found lots of change on the beaches. It does add up after a while but you certainly can't quite your job and live off of your findings. Rings, watches and necklaces are always a great find. I have a box full but they are not an everyday find.

Good luck in your search for a machine and then for some treasures.

Just came upon this post. 2 years ago I bought my first Detector and Pin pointer, along with a Junior one for my grandson. We have a lot of fun with them. There are some restrictions on where they can be used and Ownership on what you find. Public beaches are fair Game as most public places discreation is best. Some towns such as Union Beach requires one to use Head phones during open hours, I agree the beeps can be annoying. Compition is keen during the summer after hours on the beaches. do not get disgusted and give it up most do. Coins are the norm. Bottle caps and pull tabs are more the norm. State lands. and county lands can be restricted as well as Sandy Hook the full lenght because of explosives. I got Mine on line and will get back with the model # and site they are the biggest one. and best support for learning how to set and use them.
My grandson gets boared at times but when he finds a coins I salt the area hes back at it, and yes he keeps the money.
Will post as I get time I have a lot of photos from a beach tour from Ocean Grove to Key Port to work on. first. Bill

You will gather more information then you can absorb. Videos and discriptions. and Listing of clubs many in NJ. Like I said i mhave the Pioneer 505 pro 2 detector head syatem original cost $349.00  with a bunch of stuff free. A Pinpointer is a must mine is a Automax precision V4 Pinpointer
and the bounty Hunter Junior $69.00 they even have a free news letter By Weekly Free. Any question I would be glad to help. When I Beach ( Surf )Fish with my grandsons and the fishing gets slow I hand them the Detectors and they keep them busey. Bill

PS, Left out one thing on How and where you can use one just do a goggle search Nj restrictions on Metal detectors it will give you not only Nj but Federal and state restrictions. Don't let it discurage you. Plus check out the clubs on Keyyco. Again good luck Bill

Thanks for all the reply's guys....I thought more people would be doing this as a hobby. I used to use my brothers White detector years ago. Been having the itch to get back into it. After much research I ended up spending alot more than I wanted but got a machine that I can use anywhere. I purchased a Minelab Safari. Found a guy in Raritan NJ who run's a business out of his house for now. He's moving to a store location soon. He was a hundred bucks cheaper than Kellycodetecors and the guy's been doing this for over 30 years so he's a wealth of knowledge besides. I stopped by Union Beach after buying it yesterday and found 5 coins in 20 minutes. After 20 minutes I was shivering from the cold and went home to warm up. Looking forward to hunting some more.

Mike thanks for the Pm Reply. Boy that was Fast glad you got a Outfit. Did you pick up a Pin Pointer it will help you big time Not much money. whhen you get a hit and dig it will pin point the exact location so you do not need a Back Hoe  slt . Its to cold for me right now. will have to get togeather when it warms up Like 60 up  ::) Did you get Headphones or have them. The settings on mine can block out junk and detect a dedicated object once its set. Glad you found treasure first time out with it.get a Can, bag and collect what you find,
Note be carefull in areas as Union Beach that have been hit by Sandy, Not that its dangerous, Local people are sensative right now and lost much, a lot of personal items have been lost. some may feel you are taking advantage. Get to know anyone you encounter offer to show what you found.
Do The right thing, Good Hunting, Bill

I know several people who have found class rings. They made contact with the school that the rings were from and were able to determine the owner from the engraving on the band of the ring. On items as personal as that, it is more pleasurable finding the owner than it is finding the piece.  t^

And don't forget to repair where you dig. Use a pouch or apron, put good items in one pocket and gather the junk you find and dispose of the junk in the trash instead of leaving it in sight of others. Nothing will get you kicked out of an area like leaving a mess. Same as fishing spots. Leave them cleaner than they were when you came in.

Good luck in your searching.
