New to Surf Fishing and I need help!
« on: May 15, 2013, 02:46:32 PM »
Hello my name is Fuzzy,

I hope you are having a nice day. I am new to surf fishing. I plan on going surf fishing in New Jersey this summer to be more specific Island Beach State Park.

I plan on buy this:
http://www.amazon.com/Shakespeare-Medium-Action-Bigwater-10-Feet/dp/B002VPT72O/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_S_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=JNUF2TTP8EFB&coliid=IZN92TU0KAR0B&psc=1

I plan on strictly fishing on the beach. I want to just cast my line and set my rod on a sand spike. I do not want to be jigging or anything. So my four questions are:

1. Is a 10 foot rod appropriate for surf fishing?

2. Is a medium, heavy action rod an ideal action for a surf fishing rod?

3. What lb and kind of line do I need for a 10 foot, medium heavy action rod?

4. Any other things I should know about surf fishing?

Thank you and happy fishing!  slt

That combo will get you started.  The 10ft med/heavy is good for bait fishing the surf.
For line, 30-40lb braid is usually good.  30lb mono will work too if you prefer mono.

There's LOTS more you need to know about surf fishing.  Best bet is to take some time and read through the surf forum here.  After that, stop by one of the tackle shops down on the island for tackle, bait and local info.  Then hit the sand and put in some time getting a feel for it.

Good luck and enjoy.

I will help your get going...but you must be willing to put the time and effort in.
Rods and tackle: 8ft to 10 ft.
matched with balanced reel able to spool 20 to 25 lb. test and sling 3 to 8 oz of lead plus your bait which will be bunker chunks, worms, clams etc.
Stop in your local tackle store buy your bait and get to know the guys.Your bucket should have a sharp knife, extra hooks and leaders, small cutting board, selection of pyramid sinkers, your bait, sand spike, flashlite if you walk off late. I bring rain gear and extra sweat hooded shirt, drinks and eats.Check your tide and go!!!
I hope this helps.Good Luck.
