The majority of this week will be nice weather-wise. Monday, Tuesday and Friday will be dry with mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the 40's with overnight lows down into the 30's. However, Tuesday Night through Thursday Morning could be a rough couple of days, especially along the coast. A potentially strong, late Winter Coastal Storm is in the works starting late Tuesday Night, peaking Wednesday Night and moving out by Thursday Morning. Right now, we are looking at more of a Nor'Easter affect to the state with heavy rains/snow, high winds, moderate to major coastal flooding, and more beach erosion. Some areas storm surge guidance is rivaling that of Sandy coming in 9+ feet for southern areas and lessening to the north. Models are showing 17 foot waves down in Cape May. Areas southwest of NJ could see 12+ inches of snow. If the track changes at all to the northeast, NJ could certainly be in the target zone for some snow as well. This is a system I have been watching on the models for over a week. The models have continuously trended this storm, wavering between intensity, moisture, temperature and track. The NWS has already issued several Hazardous Weather Outlooks as well as a Weather Briefing. I will be moving this storm to its own thread as it has the potential to cause major problems for the state. Water conditions will not be great this week. Tuesday is the only day that may see a break from SCA's later in the morning to afternoon. Otherwise for all locations water conditions will be cautious with SCA's changing to hazardous with Gale Warnings for 60+ mph gusts and seas 9-10 feet inshore with midshore to offshore showing a peak of 17+ feet!! Surf conditions will be moderate for Monday and Tuesday with some gustier winds to 25 knots out of the west, however seas will remain 0-2 and 1-2 feet. Wednesday through Friday will bring dangerous conditions in the surf with 6-8 foot waves, rough surf, high tides and coastal flooding conditions.
Please note, this is not another "Sandy" by any means! However, this storm has the full potential of being a strong, devastating storm for areas already extremely vulnerable! A lot can change by Wednesday, but by reading what the professionals have to say about this system, the NJ Coast has high chances of being affected, with the worst case scenario being major flooding, 40-50mph sustained winds with 60+mph gusts and 6-12 inches of wet snow! With the many rebuilding situations taking place across the entire coast, everyone needs to be aware and really keep an eye on this system.
A bit of good news too. The Climate Prediction Center shows normal temperatures starting over the weekend. Looks like we will start our Spring thaw and move right on into Spring. I think this system could be the last of the Winter we see.
Low pressure influencing the area moving west onto Nova Scotia will turn southeast out to sea late Monday. Low pressure over Kentucky on Tuesday will slowly intensify as it redevelops over Virginia or North Carolina on Wednesday. It then heads slowly east/northeast past our region on Thursday. High Pressure will then build in behind the system into the Mid Atlantic Region on Friday and into the weekend.
