Need a recommendation for a local Merc mechanic
« on: September 20, 2007, 08:37:37 PM »
Not sure where this question should go so I'll take my lumps if  I guessed wrong! lol.

Anyway, can anyone recommend a decent mechanic? I need a reseal on my outdrive (Mercruiser Alpha 1). A bit of water in the gear oil. I want to make sure everything is in tip top shape before heading out this fall. Just rebuilt carb and tuned engine. Running nice but want to take care of this too.

Note that PJ in Port Monmouth doesn't work on Mercs.  :-\

Hi pktaske,

Your post is OK, if it needs to be moved one of the mod's or Rod will take care of it.  So no lumps this time, LOL

I am sure some one will post you a reply soon, be patient.

Happy Catching

How much is a bit?  Some milky gear oil when you first pull the plug, or is the entire gear oil milky?

If its a little milky when first draining and clears up quickly, the leak is not big.

First check to do yourself is to check BOTH the drain and fill plug gaskets. Many times it is double gasketed. Also check the gasket seat to see if there is any residue of an old gasket there. You want that surface clean and bright. When you tighten the plugs, use the appropriate size screwdriver. Those slots are big, you wont get away with using a small screwdriver. You want something with close to a 1/2" blade to put the right torque on the plug. Hope this gets you pointed in the right direction.

How much is a bit?

Like you could eat Cheerios in it! lol.

I pulled the lower unit off a couple weeks ago hoping I could get away with rebuilding the water pump and replacing the shift bushing (two common offenders). Wasn' to be. My upper unit is the culprit. I was going to pressure test and do it myself but too many special tool$ are needed. Rebuilt the carb in the meanwhile so the engine is humming. After I get the drive unit resealed, I should be ready for October and November...

Thanks Joey, PJ gave me his name and I was going to take it down there BUT - a close friend of mine has a guy three doors down that works Mercs so I just dropped it off. We'll see how that goes. But I'm keeping Freddys # just in case! Kudos for the effort and your welcome out on her maiden voyage. It's BYOO (bring your own oars)
