Upper New York Bay 5-31-13
« on: May 31, 2013, 02:47:53 PM »
My last couple trips have been skunks so I wasn't expecting much today. Thinking it would be a slow day I only brought one bunker, wrong choice. Bite after bite after bite the whole time. My hook up ratio was terrible for some reason so I didn't catch too many but the action kept me on my toes.

What kind of hooks are you using?  try smaller circle hooks with smaller bait.  Once there is a tug just reel don't set the hook.  I know you know this but just saying...

If your running out of Bunker, strip out a Bluefish for bait. As for the hookup ratio, are you leaving enough of the barb in the softer part of the bait so the fish will get hooked? Maybe they were just finicky that day.

I was using 4/0 J hooks. I started using smaller bait as the day went on but that didn't seem to help.

Sounds like small hooks are in order ,but ,you might be losing more rigs .So,it's a 50/50 thing .

Nice trip!  You could always switch over to metal when they are in like that...they usually hook themselves ;) ;D!
