Fished offshore on Monday with Darren, Joe and Keith. We left SRI at 4:45 am and had a nice ride out in the 10 to 15 mph west winds. Got set up and after about three hours or so we had a nice Mako playing around the boat.
It would try to eat our floats...after about an hour it cut the line of one float. Right after that a 150 lb blue shark came right up the slick and we were hooked up. We fought and released the blue shark and I re-did the drift quick. The Mako came back and this time took our bluefish fillet short rod and it was game on.
Keith fought the Mako for 30 mins and we boated a nice 150 lb class Mako (71"). It had a 10 lb bluefish in it stomach.
We gutted and iced down the Mako and then got on a wreck and had very good codfishing from 2:00 pm to 8:30 pm...we boated over 40 nice cod to 28 lbs...many over 15 lbs.
We bled and iced down the cod and headed back in at 9:00 pm...we got back at the dock at 1:00 am (Tuesday, 07-16).
GREAT trip with lots of very good eats!
Nice to see the BFT turn on...our plan was to troll on Tuesday morning but we were all beat. A lot of whales and sea turtles in the 76 degree clean/green water.
