After a month's hiatus my son and his friend Sean joined me for a day of fishing. Plan was to clam in the ocean off Sandy Hook in hopes of catching the first bass of the fall season. We were the first on the grounds just before sunrise and we cracked away for the remainder of the incoming with only the usual assortment of trash fish and one fluke coming over the rail. On to plan B, off to join the fleet near the Mud Dump. On the way out we spoted a bunch of porpoise breaking water and went over to investigate. They came right up to the boat and put on quite a show. We were suprized by a large whale that was hanging out with them that came up an spouted about 20' from the boat. After the show it was back to plan b, It was not insane fishing but we did manage a steady pick of monster blues 16.5 -18.5 lbs. We caught well over a dozen in about 2 hours time. My son Dan even managed to land a bass but he had two strikes against him, an inch short and we were in Federal waters.
Great to be back fishing again
