NJ Fishing & Boating Weather Outlook Weekly Edition: Dec 16-20, 2013

This week will be a rollercoaster ride of a week with temperatures, precipitation and water conditions.  Monday will start off cold, sunny, windy and dry.  On Monday Night through Tuesday Night chances of snow will move into the area as a clipper system moves into the Mid Atlantic and Northeast.  The track of the system depends what areas get snow and how much since the cold air will already be in place.  Any snow on Tuesday will eventually change to rain for Central and Southern areas.  Right now, Central  and Northern NJ are in the direct path with 1-4 inches possible.  Other areas south could see flurries to a an inch, but nothing substantial in accumulations.  This will all move out by Wednesday when sunny, dry and windy conditions will return through Friday before another system moves in for Friday Night into the weekend.  This system will be rain for most, except the possibility of snow showers or a mix across northwestern NJ.  Temperatures will start off cold moderating to average and then above average by the end of the week.  High temperatures will vary greatly.  They will range from upper 20’s to mid 50’s, as warmer air moves into the area at the end of the week.  Overnight lows will vary too, ranging from low teens to mid 40’s.  Winds will be moderate to gusty most of the week.  Water conditions will be back and forth with each approaching and exiting system.  Conditions will vary by day and location.  In general water conditions will be cautious to hazardous all week with a few lulls in winds and seas.  Monday will be cautious to hazardous improving some for Monday Night before deteriorating again for Tuesday into Wednesday, then improving some on Wednesday Night and then deteriorating again for Thursday and Friday.  Southern and Midshore to Offshore waters will have the worst conditions, but all areas will experience gusty winds and seas.  Surf and beach conditions will be good some days, ok to cautious on others.  Winds will be gusty on the beach and wave heights could reach 2-5 feet again during the week.  These conditions look to mimic the water conditions above.  Water temperatures are steady in the low to mid 40’s with the exception of offshore waters in the mid 50’s.  UV Index will be Low all week at 1/15.

Weak high pressure will briefly affect the area Monday into Monday Night.  A clipper system will move across the Northeast Monday Night into Tuesday Night.  High pressure will then build across the Southeast Wednesday into Thursday, then off the Southeast Coast by Thursday.  A cold front will approach the area from the northwest Friday Night into Saturday and stall near the area over the weekend with several waves of low pressure developing along the front.

The weekend will have chances of precipitation possible both days as a system moves through the area.  Originally, this looked like a coastal storm, but has moved quite inland.  It could go back off the coast, but that is a very low chance right now.  As it stands, Saturday and Sunday will have rains across the majority of the state as above average temperatures move in on Friday and stick around through Sunday.  Northwestern areas could see snow or a mix with colder temperatures in place there.  Highs will range from the low 40’s to mid 50’s.  Along the coast could even push upper 50’s to 60’s.  Overnight lows will be in the upper 20’s to mid 40’s.  Water conditions do not look favorable this weekend with high winds and elevated seas again.  Surf and beach conditions will be ok to cautious with the same gusty winds and some higher surf.

Good morning!  Sunny with some clouds mixed in this morning.  It will be mostly sunny today with increasing clouds becoming cloudy tonight.  Dry during the day today, but precipitation will move in tonight as a clipper moves through the area bringing snow/snow showers to most of the state.  Areas south of I-95/I-195 are looking at accumulations of less than an inch, increasing to the north to 1-2 inches for the rest of Central NJ and then 2-4 inches for Northern NJ.  Snow will continue into Tuesday/Tuesday Night.  Tuesday could see portions of the state switch over to rain or a mix.  High temperatures will be in the upper 20’s to mid 30’s.  Overnight lows will be mid teens to upper 20’s.  Winds will be moderate from the west inland at 10-15 mph and 15-20 mph along the coast.

Water conditions will be cautious to hazardous today with conditions improving inshore tonight.  Small Craft Advisories are in effect through tonight from Raritan Bay east to Montauk and south up the Delaware River.  Gale Warnings are still in effect for Offshore waters.  Raritan Bay will have west winds 20-25 knots with gusts to 30 knots diminishing to 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots this afternoon, then northwest 5-10 knots becoming northeast after midnight with seas 1-2 feet subsiding to 1 foot or less tonight with limited visibility of 1-3 nm.  Barnegat Bay will have west-northwest winds 15-20 knots diminishing to 10-15 knots this afternoon with gusts to 25 knots then 5-10 knots tonight before becoming variable around 5 knots after midnight with seas around 1 foot.  Delaware Bay will have northwest winds 15-20 knots with gusts to 30 knots diminishing to 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots this afternoon, then 5-10 knots tonight becoming northeast then southeast later tonight with seas 2-4 feet diminishing to 1-2 feet the 1 foot or less tonight.  Sandy Hook to Fire Island Inlet will have west winds 25-30 knots with gusts to 35 knots diminishing to northwest 15-20 knots with gusts to 25 knots late this morning then, 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots this afternoon and tonight north winds around 5 knots after midnight with seas 6-8 feet subsiding to 2-4 feet later today into tonight with limited visibility of 1-3 nm.  Inshore ocean waters will have northwest winds 20-25 knots diminishing to 15-20 knots later this morning and afternoon, then 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots tonight becoming north at 5-10 knots late before shifting to the northeast in the early morning hours with seas 3-5 feet at 10 seconds subsiding to 2-3 feet at 9 seconds tonight.  Midshore to Offshore waters will have west to northwest winds 20-30 knots diminishing to 15-20 knots in the afternoon, then 10-20 knots tonight and variable at 5-15 knots after midnight with seas 6-11 feet at 10 seconds subsiding to 4-7 feet this afternoon and 3-6 feet then 2-4 feet at 10 seconds tonight.

Surf and beach conditions will be good to OK.  West to northwest winds will be 15-20 knots with gusts to 25 knots diminishing to 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots this afternoon, then 5-10 knots late tonight.  Surf is normal with wave heights 2-4 feet subsiding to 1-3 feet later this afternoon with a 2-4 foot east swell at 9-10 seconds.  Surf temperatures are in the low 40’s.  UV Index will be Low at 1-2/15.

Good morning!  Cold and cloudy with a coating of snow across the northern two-thirds of the state this morning.  Temperatures are still below freezing everywhere except Cape May County.  Precipitation is possible and likely across most areas through the overnight tonight.  Snow changing to a mix or sleet and then rain/showers will occur for most areas except very northern/northwester NJ as daytime highs get above freezing.  Southern areas will only see rain, until tonight will bring the possibility of some snow again.  As temperatures peak this afternoon, they will also drop rather quickly back below freezing by this evening.  Overall, accumulations will still remain under an inch up to 4 inches from southeast to northwest.  High temperatures today will be in the in the mid to upper 30’s inland, upper 30’s to mid 40’s along the coast and low 30’s/below freezing across northern and northwestern counties.  Overnight lows will be back in the mid 20’s inland, low 30’s to just above freezing along the coast and low 20’s across northern areas.  Winds will be light from the southeast at 5-10 mph.

Water conditions look to improve today with good to some cautious conditions.  Tonight conditions will deteriorate with Small Craft Advisories already posted from midnight to Wednesday right now.  Offshore waters still remain in Gale Warnings.  Raritan Bay will have east winds 5-10 knots increasing to 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots later this morning, then north at 5-10 knots this afternoon becoming northwest at 5-10 knot with gusts to 20 knots tonight with seas 1 foot or less and visibility limited to 1-3 nm.  Barnegat Bay will have south winds around 10 knots becoming west-northwest this afternoon and then northwest at 10-15 knots tonight with seas around 1 foot.  Delaware Bay will have south winds 5-10 knots becoming northwest this afternoon, then north at 5-10 knots increasing to northwest 15-20 knots with gusts to 25 knots tonight with seas 1-2 feet building to 2-4 feet with visibility limited to 1-3 nm all day.  Sandy Hook to Fire Island Inlet will have east winds 10-15 knots with gusts to 25 knots becoming west later today, the northwest 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots tonight with seas 2-3 feet building to 3-5 feet this afternoon and visibility limited to 1-3 nm all day.  Inshore ocean waters will have varying and shifting winds all day.  Today will have southeast winds 10-15 knots shifting to the south with gusts to 20 knots  late morning, then southwest 15-20 knots this afternoon then west at 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots late today.  Tonight northwest winds 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots increasing to 15-20 knots with gusts to 25 knots, then increasing 20-25 knots with gusts to 30 knots after midnight before diminishing some late.  Seas will be 3-4 feet at 8 seconds building to 3-5 feet at 8 seconds tonight with limited visibility to 1-3 nm all day.  Midshore to Offshore waters will have vary winds for northern and southern portions.  Winds will be southwest becoming north to northwest the south to southeast at 5-25 knots becoming southwest and increasing to 20-30 knots tonight with seas 3-6 feet at 8 seconds building to 5-9 feet at 8 seconds tonight.

Surf and beach conditions are good to ok.  Winds could be gusty at times, especially for southern beaches varying from the east to southwest today at 5-15 knots.  Surf is normal to slightly rougher at times.  Wave heights will be 1-3 feet with some 2-4 foot waves during easterly winds possible with a 2-3 foot southeast swell at 8 seconds.  Surf temperatures are in the low 40’s.  UV Index is Low at 0-1/15.

Good morning!  Cold with a mix of sun and clouds.  Watch out for any water on surfaces that froze last night.  Dry today, remaining partly to mostly sunny then mostly clear tonight.  High temperatures will be in the mid to upper 30’s with overnight lows in the mid to upper 20’s inland and along the coast and mid teens for northern areas.  Winds will be breezy today with west winds at 10-15 mph inland  and west at 15-20 mph along the coast.

Water conditions are cautious today with Small Craft Advisories still in effect from Sandy Hook east to Montauk  and south up the Delaware River.  Winds could gust to 30 knots today with seas inland to 6 feet and offshore to 9 feet.  Raritan Bay will have west winds 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots diminishing to 5-10 knots after midnight with seas 1-2 feet.  Barnegat Bay will have west-northwest winds 15-20 knots with gusts to 25 knots diminishing to 10-15 knots tonight with seas building to 4 feet then subsiding to 1-2 feet tonight.  Delaware Bay will have west winds 15-20 knots with gusts to 25 knots  diminishing to 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots tonight, then southwest at 5-10 knots after midnight with seas 3-4 feet subsiding to 2-4 late today.  Sandy Hook to Fire Island Inlet will have northwest winds 10-15 knots becoming west at 15-20 knots with gusts to 25 knots later this morning diminishing to 10-15 knots  after midnight with seas 3-5 feet.  Inshore ocean waters will have west winds 15-20 knots with gusts to 30 knots diminishing to 10-15 knots after midnight with seas 4-6 feet at 10 seconds subsiding to2-4 feet at 12 seconds tonight.  Midshore to Offshore will have northwest winds 20-30 knots becoming west to northwest at 15-20 knots tonight, then west to southwest at 10-20 knots after midnight with seas at 5-9 feet at 10 seconds subsiding to 4-8 feet at 12 seconds tonight.  Areas of thunderstorms and rain are possible offshore today with freezing spray as well.

Surf and beach conditions will vary from good to cautious today.  Gusty winds will be from the west to northwest switching to the west to southwest tonight.  Winds will average 10-20 knots with gusts to 25+ knots.  Surf is normal, almost calm right now and will become normal to slightly rougher with wave heights 1-3 feet building to 2-4 feet with a 2-3 foot southeast swell at 8-10 seconds.  Surf temperatures are in the low 40’s.  UV Index is Low at 2/15.

Good morning!  More mild start today for the entire state, even though it is still cold temperatures are 5-10 degrees warmer than yesterday.  Sunny with a mix of clouds this morning remaining partly cloudy today and then mostly cloudy tonight.  Patchy fog is possible tonight.  There is a chance of showers tonight, mainly across northern/northwestern areas.  High temperatures today will be in the low to upper 50’s inland with mid to upper 40’s across northern areas.  Overnight lows will be in the low to upper 40’s inland with mid 30’s across northern areas.  Winds will be light to moderate from the southwest at 5-10 mph inland and 10-15 mph along the coast.
