NJ Fishing & Boating Weather Outlook Weekly Edition: New Year's Week

From one year to the next.  This year’s weather won’t be bad, but next year’s weather will give us a bit of a one-two punch on Thursday and Friday.  Water conditions will begin to improve late on Monday and moderate out before deteriorating late on Thursday for inshore; midshore to offshore will be more of a roller coaster ride this week.  Any lingering showers will move out Sunday Night into early Monday and be clear for Monday through Wednesday.  Tuesday and Wednesday across northern/northwestern parts of the state could see some scattered snow showers or flurries.  Sun will dominate, though, through Wednesday before clouds increase on Wednesday Night into Thursday with precipitation moving in.  This will be the one-two, maybe one-two-three punch to the state on Thursday and Friday.  Two systems will interact with each other starting early on Thursday; one coming out of the upper Midwest/Great Lakes and a second out of the South.  The Great Lakes system will move east-northeast and the southern system will move northeast entering the Atlantic Ocean.  From here, uncertainty begins on tracks, timing and intensity.  At minimum, the area will see some precipitation ranging from rain to snow.  Worst case scenario is a fully phased (combined interaction) coastal storm bringing a major snowstorm/nor’easter to the Mid-Atlantic into New England.  It is just too early to try and predict two systems that don’t exist yet.  Right now, I see 1-3 inches of snow accumulation statewide, with north of I95/I195 corridor getting the most snow and south of the corridor getting snow to a wintry mix.  This will change before Thursday, so as always, I will update this during the week.  Temperatures through Friday will be average in the 20’s-40’s with overnight lows in the teens to 30’s.  Temperatures will slowly decrease throughout the week.  By Thursday Night and Friday, extremely cold air will move in behind the passing storm.  This will be the coldest air yet this season with teens and 20’s for highs with single digits and 10’s for overnight lows and some gusty winds.  Wind chills will easily be in the negative numbers!  Winds will be light to moderate all week, with some breezier/gustier days such as Monday, Thursday and Friday especially along the coast.  Water conditions will slowly improve late on Monday moderating out through Thursday before deteriorating again later on Thursday and Friday for inshore.  Midshore to offshore will vary more this week.  Small Craft Advisories and Cautious conditions will continue for inshore waters on Monday before improving late Monday through Thursday.  On Friday, Hazardous Water Conditions with Small Craft Advisories and Gale Warnings are probable.  Midshore to Offshore will have Cautious conditions with Gale Warnings on Monday, improving for Tuesday with some “pcokets” of gustier winds and Cautious conditions before becoming Hazardous on Friday with Gale Warnings.  Surf and beach conditions will echo the water with OK to Cautious conditions on Monday, improving for Tuesday through Thursday before deteriorating to Cautious to Hazardous on Friday.  Water temperatures are steady in the 40’s inshore with low 50’s offshore.  UV Index will be Low at 0-2/15 all week.

Low pressure over Southern New England will continue moving northeast Sunday Night before a cold front crosses the area Monday Morning.  Light snow associated with a Clipper System moving east across Upper New State on Tuesday should remain to the north.  High pressure will briefly build across the Northeast Tuesday Night and Wednesday before another storm system affects the Mid Atlantic Area Thursday into Thursday Night.  High pressure will then build across the region beginning late Friday Night, providing tranquil, but cold weather for the weekend.

The weekend looks to improve with dry and sunny skies, but very cold temperatures with highs in the teens to 30’s and lows in the single digits to 20’s.  Water and surf conditions should improve at some point on Saturday and be good for the rest of the weekend, as high pressure will control the area.

Good morning!  Cloudy this morning with some light fog/mist in the air.  The sun is trying to make it out and it will become partly to mostly sunny today becoming partly cloudy tonight.  That will dry up the fog/mist and water from yesterday’s rain and it will remain dry today.  A cold front will cross the area this morning from northwest southeast.  High temperatures will be warmest this morning, gradually dropping throughout the day.  High temperatures will be in the low to mid 40’s falling into the mid to upper 30’s by mid-afternoon and mid 30’s falling to mid to upper 20’s across northern areas later this morning. Overnight lows will be cold in the low to mid 20’s inland, mid to upper 20’s along the coast and mid teens across northern areas.  Northwest winds will be moderate at 10-15 knots inland and 15-20 knots along the coast diminishing tonight to 5-10 knots inland tonight and 10-15 knots along the coast.  These gusty winds will cause temperatures to feel much colder than they are today.

Water conditions are cautious with Small Craft Advisories still in effect from Sandy Hook east to Montauk and south up the Delaware River.  Conditions will improve today into the overnight hours.  Gale Warnings have all been cancelled as well.  Raritan Bay will have northwest winds 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots diminishing to 5-10 knots after midnight with seas 2 feet subsiding to 1 foot or less.  Barnegat Bay will have west winds 13-16 knots becoming northwest in the afternoon with gusts to 22 knots diminishing to north-northwest at 8-13 knots tonight with seas 1 foot or less.  Delaware Bay will have northwest winds 10-20 knots with gusts to 25 knots becoming north at 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots tonight diminishing to 5-10 knots after midnight with seas 2-4 feet subsiding to 2-3 feet tonight.  Sandy Hook to Fire Island Inlet will have northwest winds 15-20 knots with gusts to 25 knots diminishing to 10-15 knots tonight with gusts to 25 knots still in the evening with seas 3-5 feet subsiding to 2-4 feet.  Inshore ocean waters will have west winds 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots with seas 2-3 feet at 10-11 seconds.  Midshore to Offshore waters will have west to northwest winds 15-25 knots becoming northwest 15-20 knots diminishing to north to northwest 10-20 knots then 10-15 knots tonight with seas 6-11 feet subsinding to 4-7 feet then 2-5 feet tonight at 10-11 seconds.

Surf and beach conditions are OK to cautious.  Northwest winds will be 10-15 knots with gusts 20-25 knots diminishing after midnight.  Surf is rough with wave heights 2-4 feet diminishing to 1-3 feet late tonight with a 2-4 foot south-southeast swell at 8 seconds.  Surf temperatures are in the low to mid 40’s.  UV Index is Low at 1-2/15.

Heads up!!  Nothing OFFICIAL, but I like NJSWF to get the most updated information and unless the models are all drunk (which is always possible), Thursday, Friday & Saturday will be a moderate to significant/major snowstorm.  For me, the snow is not the headlines, though, it's the frigid Arctic Air moving in on Saturday through next week.  We are talking about single digits for highs and negatives for lows with even colder wind chills.

This is all bound to change and moderate out some, but some type of precipitation event, from a Nor'Easter, which will also have some coastal and water impacts followed by a long blast of frigid air!

Good afternoon!  Nice day today with sunny skies with some clouds mixed in and seasonable temperatures.  There are a few scattered snow showers here and there popping up across the state.  Snow showers will continue for the rest of the day, mainly across northern/northwestern areas.  Mostly to partly sunny skies will continue becoming partly cloudy.  High temperatures are in the low to mid 40’s with low to mid 30’s across the northern part of the state.  Overnight lows will be in the upper teens to mid 20’s.  West winds are moderate at 10-20 mph.  It will be cold tonight and any precipitation on the roadways will freeze.  Be careful if you are traveling tonight!!

Water conditions are back to cautious again today.  Winds are borderline SCA criteria with gusts to 25 knots causing seas to build to 3-5 feet inshore and 4-6 feet offshore.  Small Craft Advisories are in effect through tonight for all coastal marine waters.  Surf and beach conditions are good to ok.  West winds will be 15-20 knots with gusts to 25 knots possible.  Surf is normal to a little rougher at times with wave heights 1-3 feet with a 2-3 foot south-southeast swell at 7 seconds.  Water temperatures are steady in the low to mid 40’s.  UV Index is Low at 1-2/15.

Good morning!  Cloudy with sun in some southeastern areas, which will become mostly cloudy to cloudy by later this morning.  There are some areas of fog/mist along the coast mainly as well this morning.  Today will have chances of rain/wintry mix/snow changing over to all snow at some point this evening tonight.  Precipitation looks to start around 4-5 PM for western parts of the state.  Snow forecasts remain unchanged, although it appears that the track may have shifted to the northeast a bit and the intensity has increased some.  However, official forecasts have not changed at all right now.  The new modeling this morning leaves some question as to the certainty of snow versus rain.  Winter Storm Warnings, Winter Weather Advisories, Coastal Flood Advisories, Wind Chill Advisories, Small Craft Advisories and Gale Warnings are all in effect for the entire state and for marine waters.  High temperatures today will be in the mid 30’s inland, upper 30’s to mid 40’s along the coast and mid to upper 20’s across northern areas.  Overnight lows will be in the single digits to low 20’s as that cold air moves in!  Winds will vary and pick up later today with 30-40 mph winds tonight.

Water, and surf and beach conditions are cautious to hazardous today.  Winds will continue to increase throughout the day and seas will build.  Winds to 45 knots are likely with seas at 10-17 feet.  If this low stays closer to the coast and intensifies, these numbers will be on the low side.  Seas have already kicked up and the surf is rough, starting to look like a washing machine, with wave heights around 3-5 feet already.
