NJ Fishing & Boating Weather Outlook Weekend Edition: Jan 25-26, 2014

A slight relief from frigid cold, by a few degrees, but more snow showers likely and winds will continue to blow making cautious to hazardous water conditions.  High pressure will mainly dominate the weather pattern, however some weak systems will move through this weekend, bringing chances of snow showers and some slightly warmer, albeit, still cold temperatures to the state.  Snow accumulations are likely in the 1-2 inch range with a worst case scenario of 1-4 inches from some weak, quick moving Clipper systems moving through from Canada.  Snow will be in scattered to widely scattered showers with possible heavier squalls at times, especially across northern portions of the state.  Temperatures may reach above freezing for the first time in days on Saturday, only to drop for Sunday.  High Pressure will take control again for next week, with some more single digit highs and lows and the continuation of the Arctic Air invasion.  Wind chills will continue to be an issue, making cold temperatures feel even colder and drop to dangerous levels.  Winds will continue to blow with Gale Warnings continued over the next week, plus or so.  Water conditions will be cautious at best and likely hazardous.  Freezing spray is also a problem now as well.  Surf and beach conditions will be ok to cautious with gusty winds, rough surf and wave heights over 5 feet.  Water temperatures have dropped quite a bit.  Many rivers and bays are frozen, with water temperatures well below freezing and thermometers not registering.  Surf temperatures are in the low 30’s and below freezing in areas.  Inshore ocean waters are in the upper 30’s to low 40’s.  Offshore waters are in the upper 40’s.  UV Index will be Low 0-2/15.

Arctic High Pressure will continue to be the dominant weather feature into next week, however a few weak systems  will cross the area bringing the potential for light snow.  Low pressure will move through Southeastern Canada on Saturday, with its associated cold front crossing the area late in the day.  From late Sunday into Monday, more low pressure will track from the Great Lakes to the Northeast, sending another cold front through our region late Monday Morning.  Arctic High Pressure then re-establishes itself for the remainder of next week.

Next week looks dry so far, but extremely cold again with highs below freezing, in the teens and 20’s and lows in the single digits with significant wind chills.  Any precipitation that does manifest, will fall as snow.  Water, surf and beach conditions will continue to be cautious to hazardous with Gale Warnings likely most of the week.
