Lots advice needed- Brand new at kayak fishing
« on: July 18, 2015, 11:17:22 AM »
Here is a quick background:
I have a sit in kayak that i use around lakes and reservoirs.
I, unfortunately am not a fisherman, and have not really fished before, until this summer when my 3 year old boy became obsessed with fishing after a trip to bass proshop. As a result a bought  basic fishing gear an decided a actually really enjoy it.
I have had mild success at the reservoirs and surf fishing.
I have also decided I really want to to start kayak fishing salt water.
I'm trying out some yaks this week but I'm pretty sure it will be the ocean kayak Big game 2 or trident 13. Will likely get a lowerance elite 3 or 4 FF.

I need advice on a good fishing rod reel combo, types of lure or bait for his time of year at sandy hook or raritan bay?
Good launching spots?

I'm alone in this new adventure, meaning I don't; really know anyone else fish kayaking, so are there any clubs or groups

Thanks for your help. It is appreciated
BTW, Im in Northeast Jersey

Welcome Aboard. First do you plan on Ocean Going? If so, I would highly suggest to go Sit on top, and a good PFD. Flip a few times, and learn to get back on board. Try to go out with someone else too. At least until your comfortable. Study weather, Waves, and tides. Get a sea anchor, and a nice anchor to use. As far as Fishing gear, smaller lighter works better. I use a spinner and bait caster. Fishing crates work very well. You tube has a bunch of info.
Either way this is the time of the year. Water temps nice. If you don't catch anything, go for a swim. Cheers M8.

Doc,
Hello welcome aboard slt, I am a kayak fisherman. I live in northern new jersey also. I fish the Raritan bay a lot, I try to go every weekend weather permitted. if you want to try the bay a few good spots are Leonardo, on route 36. it is next to the ammunition pier earl. do not get close to the pier you will be given a escort by CG, OR EARL Navel staff.
before the Earl Navel pier is a town called Belford there is nice flat area there. verity of species of fish to catch. great learning place.

Also if you go to Google earth download the program and look for these towns I mentioned also Google earth will show you plenty of places to launch from free.

also another place to go is Sandy Hook. mind you this place fills up quick, before 7:00am it is free after you pay. there again is place you need to use Google earth, look for horse shoe cove, the bay itself you can launch from anywhere.

Next being on the after all day in the sun drains you very quick watch out for that.

Most off all pay attention to the tide's don't want to fight the tide. also always wear your PFD. People that don't think they are the best swimmers In the world OR THEY JUST DONT NEED IT. When you fall out and get hit on the head and knocked out no one is there to put it on you. to many kayakers have died this year, that is why I stress this issue.

I am going on vacation when I get back maybe can hook up I can introduce you to a few kayak friends and you can see the places and spots we go to.

Dale
