new to surf fishing

Welcome Aboard,

First where will you be doing most of your fishing?  My home grounds so to speak is Island Beach State Park as I am from Toms River.  Right now at the beginning of the season it is definitely "fishing" and not so much "catching" as the main blue fish run is quieting down.

This time of year the bait are all over the place as the bunker pour out of the inlets.  I try to tell those surf fishing to use smaller hooks this time of year and to cast out into the rips and get it down as fast as you can..  The bass are still sluggish as the water is still trying to warm up.  All they want are small chunks and scraps the blues leave behind.  So give them what they want.

I use a simple HI?LO rig with whatever weight will hold bottom small hooks like a 2/0 or 3/0 circle hook.  Be patient and you will be rewarded.

OK Whats a hi lo rig

Hi Joe,

A hi lo rig is nothing more that a piece of mono tied with 2 dropper loops with hooks hanging off them.  the sinker goes at the bottom and the other end is attached to your line.  When you cast out the sinker rests on the bottom and the hooks with bait are in a high position above the sinker and one lower or between the hi hook and the sinker.

You can purchase these at any bait and tackle shop.  Most of the big mart stores will not have them.  I make my own as they are simple to make yourself.

Thanks for the definition. I plan on fishing in the Seaside Heights, Seaside Park  area. Probably in late Sept or Oct. I use to go down to Seaside way back when I was young and stupid! Love it down there.That was when you could buy a slice for 25 cents!

I remember those days.  We started coming down the shore ever since I can remember.  I'm 67 now and have been living in Toms River since 1961.  My parents had friends in Seaside Park from my cub scout days.  Those days are gone my friend.

If you need any more info just ask.  If you need any bait or tackle Betty & Nicks would be your best bet for no non sense info on the island.  or the Hook House before you cross the bridge.
