GAMBLER Fluke Report
« on: May 29, 2015, 06:37:19 PM »

We were pretty satisfied with memorial day weekend's fluke action. A lot of shorts with a few keepers in the mix, along with the usual suspects, such as sea robins, sundials and sandsharks. But by Sunday afternoon, the water began to chill with the southerly current. At the start of the weekend, the surface temp was 57f but by yesterday it had dropped to a frigid 45f. The cold water put the fish into a dormant state and very few were caught. Today, however, the temp was coming back up with a northerly current and I am hopeful for the weekend.

On Friday and Saturday night, we will be fishing for stripers and blues

I often read and hear about the south wind cooling the water temps. Can anyone explain that? I would have figured south wind brings in warmer water from down south but it obviously does not work that way. So 3 questions, hopefully not dumb ones?

1) Why does a north wind warm the water more than a south wind?

2) How do you tell the water temp down deep? Do you drop a thermometer or is your electronic equipment able to read it down deep somehow?

3) At what temp do the fluke generally come alive?

Found my own answer. UPWELLING: Upwelling, and in particular coastal upwelling, is an oceanographic phenomenon that removes the warm (and sun heated) water at the surface away from land, and replaces it with cooler water from the depths of the ocean. The cause of this is from wind driven currents and a resulting process called Ekman transport. Essentially, it is this process that transports the warm surface water 90 degrees to the right of the wind direction (in the northern hemisphere). So, along the New Jersey Coast for instance, when there is a south or southwest wind, upwelling is almost certain to occur as the surface water gets pushed 90 degrees to the right, and out to sea.
