Already into August! Where has the time gone this summer? A decent weather weekend, despite heat and humidity, but water conditions will not be as great with borderline to cautious conditions on the ocean most of the weekend. The heat and humidity will continue with high humidity and highs in the upper 80’s to low 90’s inland and at the shore with some low to mid 80’s across northern areas. Overnight lows will be in the mid 60’s to mid 70’s with slightly cooler lows across northern areas as well. Heat indices will reach mid 90’s to even 100’s in places, so keep that in mind. Some scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible on Saturday and even into Sunday. Higher chances on Saturday, but around 30% or less and then 10% or less on Sunday. A popup shower or thunderstorm won’t be a surprise, though, on either day. Water conditions will be borderline to cautious both days, especially on Saturday for all location and for ocean waters on Sunday. Winds will pick up into Saturday late morning/early afternoon increasing to 20 knots with seas to 2-4 feet, some 5 feet and midshore to offshore seeing 6+ feet. Winds will subside by Sunday, but seas could still be high throughout the day. I wouldn’t throw the towel in for either day without checking current conditions by buoy or in person. Rivers and bays will be borderline on Saturday, but good for Sunday. Surf and beach conditions will be good to ok. Surf will be rougher and higher as winds increase on Saturday around 2-4 feet and will continue for Sunday. Rip Current Risk will be Low to Moderate, however Saturday could see conditions deteriorate to High Risk. Water temperatures are steady in the 70’s and 80’s with surf temperatures down into the low to mid 70’s. If the southwest winds continue, water temperatures on the ocean could drop pretty quickly if a southerly swell gets pushed up the coast. UV Index will be Very High at 8-9/15.
A weak cold front will move through the region Thursday Night, then stall to the south and east on Friday. The next weak cold front should cross the area late Saturday before stalling offshore Sunday. A few weak waves of low pressure may track along this front on Monday, while high pressure moves in from the west. A stronger cold front should arrive Tuesday, then stall nearby Wednesday.
Next week will continue with the heat and humidity with highs in the 80’s and 90’s with overnight lows in the 60’s and 70’s. Humidity will be moderate to high, with some minor relief from the uncomfortable dew points, but only for short periods of time as a few weak cold fronts pass. It will be mostly dry during the week with some chances of showers and thunderstorms scattered throughout the week, with greater chances on Monday and Thursday. Water, surf and beach conditions will be borderline to cautious for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and improving on Thursday and Friday, barring any “tropical” development off the coast.
The Atlantic Tropics are watching two areas for the potential of development. One area is off of the East Coast and the second is out near Africa. Both have a low chance of further development. The area of showers and thunderstorms off of South Carolina regardless of development will get caught up and merge with a frontal system and continue to move off to the northeast on Friday. How much development will determine how much it affects or doesn’t affect water conditions. I do not see this a threat to land right now. The system out off of Africa, has a long ways to go, but will be approaching more conducive conditions for development, however any affects are a ways off.
