NJ Fishing & Boating Weather Outlook Weekend Edition: Aug 15-16, 2015

A hot weekend with borderline water conditions. The weekend will have more sun than clouds, with some lower chances of isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly across norther to northwestern areas, possible extending to central and central western parts of the state. I wouldn’t rule out an isolated thunderstorm anywhere on Saturday, but those pinpointed areas have the highest chances. These storms will be short lived, if they pop-up or move in, so certainly nothing that will bring anything long term or widespread. These storms could bring heavy rains, dangerous lightning, and gusty winds, though. Sunday looks mostly dry with minimal to no chances of precipitation. Heat and humidity will be returning, warming on Friday and then hot this weekend with highs in the upper 80’s to low 90’s inland, with mid 80’s at the shore. Overnight lows will be upper 60’s to low 70’s with lower to mid 60’s across northern areas. Humidity will be moderate to high, however not the highest. Dew points will be in the low to upper 60’s, at most, so even heat indices will not be that elevated. Water conditions look mostly good, however there is the possibility of winds gusting to 20 knots causing seas to increase. The increase will come for Saturday Night and Sunday. Seas *could* increase to 4 feet inshore and 5-6 feet midshore to offshore. NOAA/NWS is going with the higher end of the forecast, while BW is middle to the lower end of the guidance for their forecast. This weekend is certainly not a blowout. Surf and beach conditions will be good to ok. Winds could be gustier to 20 knot gusts at times with higher surf possible to 4 feet or so. Rip Current Risk will be Moderate to Low. Water temperatures have dropped a few degrees again, with waters in the 70’s. Surf temperatures are in the low to mid 70’s. UV Index will be Very High at 8-9/15.

High pressure will remain over the region through Saturday. A weak cold front will cross the area Saturday Night. High pressure will then return on Sunday and persist into the new week. Another cold front will approach the region around Tuesday.


Next week will continue hot and humid through midweek with highs in the upper 80’s and low 90’s and overnight lows in the 60’s and 70’s. It will be mostly dry through midweek. Wednesday Night will see some chances of showers and thunderstorms and then a slight break in temperatures dropping back into the mid 80’s with overnight lows in the 60’s and some 70’s. Highs will be cooler at the shore and lows will be cooler across northern areas. Water, surf and beach conditions look to be borderline to cautious for Monday and Tuesday, improving for the rest of the week.

The Atlantic Tropics are quiet.
