I do not understand why people are still catching fish?  When I go out i always have bad luck  bngh bngh bngh Well in early Sept. I went to Pulaski NY to get some samlon and got nothing from then on! bngh bngh bngh

Because there, there?  No seriously.  I will probably be catching fish off the beach into January.

Maybe longer, if the weather and bait are still hold up.

Catching fish comes with experience.  Putting a hammer in someones hand does not make him a carpenter.  You have to put in your time and learn.

First, learn the proper bait/lures to use.  Then learn HOW to use them.  Also, you have to be in an area that holds fish.

Put in your time, get experience, and you will be catching as many fish as the next person.  Just keep at it.  That is the only way to get experience.

I'm new at this, too.  I have yet to catch my first fish from the beach.  But, as I told Paul, as long as I learn something on each trip out, it's not a wasted day.  Eventually, I'll put all the pieces together and be in the right place at the right time and will get my reward!  Time takes time, ya know?

Very good advice Joe and Ash,  it doesn't come easy and there is a lot to learn.  But that is half the fun.  getting out there as often as you can.  Listening to others and asking questions.  Never be afraid to ask questions especially on this site, that is what we are here for.  If you need help or just wish to tag along with me or some of the other guys on the site just ask.  If it is possible it will be done.

Surf fishing is not an easy sport to learn but it can be very rewarding and fun.  I like to get out at least 2 to 3 times a week, I don't catch fish all the time but at least I know where to try and what to use.

All this is by just asking questions especially at a good B&T shop.

Been fishing this area for over 50 years and still learning.  That is why if you read the surf section I will post some change in conditions of the surf after a good blow.  It is forever changing.  Learn to read the beach and you will start to see your strike rate start to climb.

like all the guys have said"keep at it" ask questions, talk to the bait and tackle guys, read the Fishermen,NoreastAngler,and allthe stuff you can,attend some seminars if possible.When time permits Bait and Plug awaaaay!. None of us knows it all , we all have different levels of knowledge. Each one of us gets Pissed and Skunked , but we try to learn from it.Even after a good day I ask myself what ,where ,when ,how and why.Good Luck and Stay With it.It becomes a sickness, a healthy sickness,just ask all my doctors.

Granted this time of year is not the best especially off the beach.  But they are there and you must do your homework.

You must do the following at a minimum:

1).  Check the tides the best time one day might not be good for the following day.  Try an outgoing tide at least 1 hour before low and 1 hour passed low.  Then the same for High Tide.

2).  Check the type of bait that is running and match the hatch so to speak.  Try to mimic what is running.  Ask the B&T's for advice they for the most part won't steer you wrong, especially with so many of them around and the possibility of a difficult year coming up.  They want your return business.

3).  Learn to read the beach.  Learn where the slough's are and where the bars are and the rips that help you to realize that they are the highway system that the bait and fish rely on to get a meal or loose a predator.

All this takes time and effort.  Don't give up keep on trying new things.  If you notice one thing and one thing alone is that there is not only one way to catch a fish.  This is not a direct science.  If it were it would not be any fun catching every time you cast out.  The fun is knowing that when you do catch a fish you outsmarted nature.

Learn, ask, try, design, build, read, make things happen by not standing still.  Sooner or later things will fall into place and you will start to catch.  Then your job will be to teach someone your new skill.  Don't keep it a secret.

That's an excellent suggestion crabcake.  I would make that my priority for the weekend if I wasn't going on the Bandit tomorrow in Delaware.

Well by the looks of the amount of posts you have.  You can now gain entrance to the Members Den where you will fine a whole lot of very usefull information.  Be sure to plug in your info so this way if you are out you might get a call about surf conditions at least from Sandy Hook to Barnegate Inlet.

Where do you normally hit the suds?

I can be found on the beach of Lavellette, Ortley Beach Seaside Heights Seaside Park or IBSP.  My two favorates are Ortley and IBSP.
