What kinds of tackle would you like to see in stores?
« on: January 19, 2008, 11:05:53 AM »
Just a quick survey for all you out there that shop for tackle in the "big box" stores, i.e. Walmart, Kmart, Dick's, Sports Authority etc.

What specific types and brands of tackle (rods, reels, combos, line, lures, boxes, waders, accessories etc.) would you like to see in these type stores?  What are they lacking?

Please be specific as possible in your responses. t^

Thanks,
Bob

Bob, I can't be specific, but I think guys would like to see the big box stores carry things in quantity.  Such as, a one hundred pack of hooks, a gross of swivels, etc.  Buying in bulk is usually a lot cheaper than buying three or four at a time.

I know when I buy my stuff, it's always in bulk,  a gross of fish finders, a gross of snap swivels, etc.

I always found it tuff to get the line that I like. I would like to see larger selection in the bulk spools not the 300 yard spools that the machine in the store can't handle, of braid. Spider wire!

And I would also agree with Capt. Joe for bulk items, think sam's club of fishing tackle.

IU know the big box stores carry a lot of things useful faor the general public and I still get a number of things there but if you want specific brands you can't beat the bait & tackle stores.

Plus I would rather get my terminal tackle from a B&T knowing that I am going to get better treatment when I go in for big ticketed items.

Just try and asking an attendant at WalMart a question... 5hrug

Thats true and if you are looking for bigger plugs and metals you are going to have to go the the B&T's plus I haven't seen any AVA in the bigger stores at least not down here.

Rarely if ever.

Once in a blue moon I'll stop in my local K-Mart and check out their fishing tackle selection. There are those far & few between times that I'll find something that I use/like.

At most of the big box stores you will find the imported terminal tackle.  Too cheap to use and usually way to big for their purpose.  A 50# snap swivel they carry is large enough to hook your anchor to it but not strong enough to hold up with a small amount of pressure on it.

Carry quality items.  The price maybe a little higher but the quality will be worth it.

I agree with Joe on the bulk items in terminal tackle.  I like the way B&T has reels that you can handle unlike the big box store blister packs and mostly low quality.  The big drawback that I find in the B&T stores is that if something is suddenly the hot, must have lure, gulp, jig or whatever it is usually sold out quickly and then they seem to have a slow restocking process.

Hmmm... I was expecting to hear a lot more.   But I guess (other than the few items listed) these stores have got it pretty much covered.  Thanks for all your responses. ;D

I buy stuff at Sports Authority or Dick's. Mostly freshwater tackle, line, tackle boxes and thing likes that.

I think what they carry is ok generally. I don't expect them to have top of the line or very specific gear.

If I want to buy something specific or I'm not familliar with, I'd rather go to  a small shop where they have knowledge. For example, I bought a wire line troling outfit a couple of years ago from a tackle shop. They set me all up with everthing I needed and gave me some tips. I wouldn't expect that at a big place.

IMHO, best deal on bulk items (hooks, snaps, fish finders, leadheads, diamond jigs etc.) is at the various fishing shows throughout the winter.

Sports authority usually has some nice sales and they have a larger fishing section than Walmart or K-mart.
