shark
« on: January 28, 2008, 03:04:00 PM »
Is it possible to catch shark 3-5 miles out. I had someone tell me that I don't need to go out pretty far for shark. obviously I'm pretty new at this. I've striper fluke and bluefished before but if I'm out 5 miles striper, or fluke fishing and I set up a rod for shark is it possible to maybe get one. what kind? Thank you again.

This past year there were numerous thresher sharks in close.  I personally hooked into about a four foot thresher (not including the tail) while fluke fishing within, I believe, two miles of the beach.  I didn't land the shark and he put on a great display of power.

I have seen a few others in that close.  They were all crashing bunker schools.   t^

there really isn't a jurisdiction for where you can catch sharks.  I caught them in the bay in LEH
Fish out of Toms River NJ.
Call Nick for open boat, 973-417-5756, or on Channel 68.

Typically, most sharks will be found out in the mudhole 15+ miles out. However, as mentioned, the past 4-5 years has seen an increasing number of Threshers (and threshers only for most part) right up on the beaches (try 100 yds from beach) ceashing the schools of bunkers, blues and bass feeding on the bunkers From Atlantic Highlands down to Seaside (probably further south, but I don't fish that area).

I will be carrying a shark rig with me on the boat and will be bringing a 30-50lb class outfit with me each trip I plan on turning the hook and fishing out front this year JUST in case :)

I saw this on the news this past summer. A guy landed a 6 foot bull shark from the surf(that probably would of been the NJ state record). The fight was over a hour long. As soon as the shark was on shore the guy put his rod down and the shark started rolling back into the ocean, the guy didnt know what to do and the shark was lost. What a story!

This is true. Sharks off the beach are not a rare occurrence.  I have a friend that targets then off IBSP and has been pretty successful.

I have not seen him land one yet as I usually target the usual fish like the striped bass and blue fish among others.  That is enough of a thrill for me for right now.
