striper season
« on: January 29, 2008, 03:43:39 PM »
People say that striper season starts April 1st. What if it is still pretty cold out, or snowing. Is it pushed back some or how does that work.

There are stripers around even now :)

Water temp is usually the key.

You can pretty much catch stripers year round, however the spring migration might very well be early or late depending on weather and water temps.

open all year within three miles of Shore......even during breeding season, inshore never closes.

I know I and most other serious Striper fishermen, will release the Big Cows (females) to breed. Take a couple pic's a couple mearurements for your Fiberglass mount and release them.

I do not begrudge anyone taking their fish of a lifetime.........the best eating are the smaller fish TT^ t^

I usually give out prizes for the first weighed in fish.  The last couple years the first keeper has shown up at my door in Mid March.

Hopefully the winter will continue mild and the water temps come up so March 1st will see active fish.

There is no closed season for stripers..

I thought that striper season was closed in the back bays, rivers, bays and inlets from Janaury 1 through March 1. However there was no closed season in ocean.

I think thats pretty stupid. the same fish that is upsteam could be in the ocean in under an hour and vise-versa. The rules should be the same for the ocean and rivers.

Just my own .02 I think they are looking at the spawn possibiblty since they spawn in the fresh or brackish waters and since a lot of fish linger all winter.  The water in the shallower waters of a bay and its estuaries get warmer sooner it sort of makes sense.
