Old Fart and a Yak???

Hi All,

I have been toying with the idea of getting a kayak now that I got the OK from my surgeon about how high I can bend my legs after surgery.

He feels as though the mussels have become strong enough that I should be able to handle it to a certain degree.

I have been looking at quite a few over the winter and have a possible candidate.

It is the Prowler Big Game Angler

I would love to really be able to fish the back part of IBSP's sedge islands properly as a friend of mind did last year and really nailed the Stripers, Blues and the Weakfish.

Anyone else have one and could input the good points and the bad points It would be a real help.  Or should I go in a different direction?  Or just stay satisfied with the surf?

There have been quite a few times when I wish I had the ability to get back in those cuts in the sod banks behind IBSP.  My 18' CC is just too big to do that.  But that kayak would put you on fish that most of us can't get too!

It would probably take a bit of getting used to at first, and I'm not sure about all that rowing stuff (I'm kinda partial to outboards  ).  But it could open up a whole new world of fishing for you!

Maybe you could see if anybody on the board has one you could borrow for a couple of times before you shell out over $2K for that one.   Just my two cents for you.

they are a real thrill once you get used to them. i started in the back bays, just getting used to handling boat wakes and such, then i started taking it into the ocean. that's where the fun starts for real

A sit on is the right way to go for fishing since it does not fill up with water and is self draining.  You can put the scuppers in to keep the water off you feet if you are in protected water.  I would take a look at the website  http://www.kayakfishing.com/  and see what gives with accessories etc.  There is a big kayak show on the 28-30 of march in Somerset.  It is run by the Jersey Paddler (http://jerseypaddler.com/ and they have hundreds of kayaks on the floor from all the major manufacturers.  They are more money but I was intrigued by the Hobie Mirage drive where you pedal and leave your hands free to fish.  You still need to carry a paddle.  One of the must have accessories is some way to store the paddle while fishing.  Some use a clip and others just use a leash.  The fishing kayaks are much wider than other kayaks which gives them addtional stability and load carrying capacity.  I have only fished in fresh water lakes with mine but it is not a dedicated fishing type.  JerseyPaddler also lets you try before you buy on the Metedeconk which is near their store. They also have a two year trade in if you upgrade to a kevlar of fiberglass boat.  Harry's outside of Trenton also has try outs at Lake Mercer once the weather warms.

Thanks for the input guys.  Jersey Paddler is right in Brick only 20 min away I might take a look there.  Bob Kislins has the OK as well which is right around the corner so to speak.

A friend of mine has one but it is a lot narrower than the one I am looking at which makes it less stable.  Just that little 6" makes a big difference.

I have seen guys back there sitting sideways and it looks very comfortable.

I believe the base price is around $1,000 then all the add ons brings up the price substantially.  It would be cool to have a fish finder on board it looks like there are many holes and cuts out there to explore.

Buyer beware- Watch out for Kislin's- they have been known to offer NOS merchandise as this year's models (if that matters at all to you....) I had one guy swear he was selling me this year's snowboards when all he had were last year's leftovers. Also knew someone who used to work there they said it was bizznezz as usual.. Still new but not quite right...
