Chumming questiion
« on: March 02, 2008, 07:37:14 AM »
I am thinking about getting a grinder. My question is, does it matter what you grind for chum, or does it need to be specific chum for species targeted? for example; do i need to use only bunker or clam for striper, or can i make a mix of junk bait fish ???
Later for now,

You don't really need to grind the clam for bass (maybe winter flounder tho, but I wouldn't use a grinder).

As far as fish, you want to use an oily fish. Bunker, mackeral or even bluefish for chumming sharks (probably work well for other blues too).
Stuff like Sea Robins, etc wouldn't work well as they are ot oily enough to put a scent slick out.

Honestly, if you are new at this, you are far better off buying chum form your bait and tackle store (unless you have a lot of time and a HUGE freezer to store it in).

I ddo usually chum with clam bellies and have had some success. I also stock up on large quantities of herring from the delaware spring run. I have also in past caught fresh water white perch and strip them out and do well with them on fluke. thought I could grind them all up.  thanks for the input, Got to think about it before buying it, I got major cabin fever and have been buying stuff like crazy, maybe I better slow down a bit  lol :)

I know the feeling.

There is a difference using a strip of fish for bait, then using it to grind up for en effective chum.

Making chum is a messy experience.

For the few times you are going to wind up doing it this year, buy it from the store.

For

Stripers: I lower a 3 gal pail of smashed up clams to the bottom and then smash clams over the side.

For Chuncking:I will take the slab of frozen Bunker and cut it up on my bans saw to the size chunks I want and then back in the freezer, save a lot of time and mess on the boat.

For Flounder: I make my own chum from Dog Food, chopped clmas/mussels,corn/rice/bunker oil.

For Blues: Chunk Bunker or Butterfish from the frozen slabs. For making the chum to throw over the side I will let the slab of Bunker thaw out and then I place in a bucket and chop up fine with a chopper i riged up. Just add some water to the mess and stir it up, then freeze. TT^

You can also add a small bottle of bunker oil to the bucket before freezing or using.  Sometimes freezer burn destroys the oil droplets and I found the oil really helps get the scent out into the water.  Just don't drip it on the deck unless you like skating.

i have a chum grinder, and like said before, you only want to grind OIL fish to slick the water and draw fish to the boat.
Fish out of Toms River NJ.
Call Nick for open boat, 973-417-5756, or on Channel 68.
