UT OH-Another Fluking Jig I'm Going To Have To Test

It's hard for me to jump on board a product where it looks like the end result is to sell a newly produced rod and reel to use for the lure.

Yup, they are the BOSE of the fishing industry it seems when it comes to the lures.

Spro works just fine for me as do the butterfly like jigs I can buy on ebay for $2-3 (less in bulk) to catch bluefish and bass on and they already work with my existing gear

I'm NOT going to buy the "specially" designed rod & reel that Shimano is hawking for use with these jigs.

I did just fine using a butterfly or as they are generically referred to as knife jigs with a rod & reel that I already owned.

Speaking of which, up until right before New Years buying ProFish butterfly jigs (the same ones I was catching fish on all fall) on Ebay for $2-4 (that's including shipping) a pop. I loaded up big time. Must have picked up close to 2 dozen.

I buy 1 or 2 of these jigs new and test them out. If they work I'll search out cheap places to buy them. If they don't work, oh well.

Great approach Skol.  No need for the specialized rod and reel.  Find an outfit you already have that works the lure properly and your good to go.   

It does look like a lure that would work, but with everything that's out there already, Shimano may be hard pressed getting $16 for one lure.

Just like any other kind of fishing, you don't need most all the different gear, but it usually makes it more fun and productive when you have it.  When my sister used to live in Santa Barbara she would tell me about the Mexican guys that would fish off the piers using a baited hook attached to a length of line wrapped around a soda can!

When I grew up, I remember having two rods.  One was my freshwater rod and one was my saltwater rod.  Now I have more than I can use in a year!

The way I look at it, fishing is supposed to be a challenge, right?  I can sometimes get bored dragging the same old baits behind the boat the same old way.  So, for me it's wonderful to constantly have new methods to try and new gear to use.

I may not need all the new and specialized tackle, but the tackle monkey on my back may feel otherwise!

BTW, this new jig is based on the Japanese Madai Jig which have been around for a couple of years now.

i saw the soda can thing too. this past october i was on a peir by my house and was fishing for stripers. i had a couple of bites but didnt really catch anything. then the guy with the sodacan caught a 20 pounder.

I'd say light-heavy weight as I still had a few trays of jigs at home that day  .

Now if you truely want to see some full blown heavy weight tackle-hoing I should bring ALL my fluke terminal tackle out one day. As it stands now, I have 2 of the big rectangluar milk crates filled with Plano trays (I'd estimate that there are 10-12 tray's per crate) stuffed with fluke stuff and a smaller sized tackle bag filled with fluke stuff.

Of course if I ever did bring all that gear it would be accompanied by the proper rod/reel set ups. So where talking at least 5 rods at a minimum.

Hey you can't take your $$ with you when you go---so you might as well spend it on something you enjoy.

Hmm...weird looking jigs. I'm sure they'll catch Fluke with a nice squid strip off the back.

They remind me of freshwater bass frog lures.

How do you decide what to bring on any given day 

Usually depends upon where I think we'll be fishing.

If I know I'll be fishing deep water or rough stuff in the ocean then the bay fluking gear gets left home and vice versa.

If I'm a fluke til you puke trip that might have me fishing from the bay shallows to deep channels to offshore reefs than pretty much alittle of everything comes.

I also like to have a a tray or 2 of tackle for other species that might be encountered. late spring/early summer some small metal in case I encounter bluefish. In late summer soft plastics for weakfish and small metal and flies for albies.

I have my 'favorite' rods but will always bring a spare or two as you never know.

Best example of me having allot of tackle was afew years back on a fluke trip. There were few keepers caught (maybe a dozen). I decided to tie up a rig that had a Spro on the bottom and a 4" Fin~S off a dropper above. It probably took me less then 45 minutes to not only take my limit of fluke to #6 but also add 4 weakfish. In that time there was maybe 2 other keeper fluke and no weakfish caught. Talk about getting mugged. Now that doesn't happen every single time but it pays off when it does.

Actually the hardest decision for me to make is what boat and out of what port to fish. That always gives me fits  bngh.

Shimano makes expensive but high quality products. They are always coming up with innovative things. I used to race mountain bikes and was always impressed with the components they produced.   With that said.
