I was going to go with an interstate grp 27 this year, but my pops swapped out all his batteries and gave me a good condition West marine grp 24 (one on sale now) for nothing, so free beats all.

Next year I may move that to my starting and buy a Cabelas AGM group 27 since it will fit in the 24 tray and has at least 30% more capacity. Will run it as my house. I only have so much rom in my bilge for duals batteries and the oil tank unfortunately.

The interstates are well priced for sure. The distrubotr close to my house can sell me the group 27 for $75 or so which is nice for a quality grp 27.

I buy AGM style- absorbed glass mat- I like Optima but there's equivalents-- better in almost every category except double the price. When my other Interstate is done (which may be this year) I will buy another AGM.

Be careful of those OPtimas.

Apparently, they need an ultra low charge if you run the battery down.

Charging a dead one from your alternator after a jump is a no-no and I have heard once it goes down that low, it is never the same.

I hear NOTHING but good about the Sears Die hard AGMS.  I believe they are made by Odyssey.

Cabelas AGM's are highly rated by many as well (except the posts are small, so they have to be upgraded).

 There are 3 types of batteries. Starting, deep cycle and dual purpose. Which is the best choice?
I read somewhere to stay away from dual purpose.

Depends on what you are using it for.
If a dedicated starting battery (like I am going to have) and have a house battery dedicated to running my electronics, pumps , etc, then I would us ea deep cycle for the house.

If you plan on just going with a 1 battery setup, then get a group 27 dual purpose.

IF you have the funds, the Cabelas Group 27 (even the group 24 since it is fairly close in spec) is REALLY the way to go.

Lots of guys who are running Optimax and Verado engines are using it (and those engines spec a MUCH higher cranking amps then most other outboards).

If budget is a concern, go with an Interstate.

Rmemeber, having onlya 1 battery setuo, you will need the battery to crank the engine, then provide enough slow juice for running fishfinder, radios, pumps etc when drifting with engine off.

That is why they make the dual purpose.
