Obtaining you Captain License (6-pack)
« on: April 10, 2008, 05:58:45 PM »
I believe someone ask me were I got my License..

First off, Let me say going to get you 6 pack operators license is no easy task. I know for myself it was a challenge. I also know that Young Gull is in class right now and will agree it alot to absorb. So be prepare to have alot of info. thrown at you. I have been on the water for many years and it still was a tough course to go through,

I opted to take a 9 day crash course.. I don't recommend this schedule if you work full time. It was the longest 9 days for me, worked all day then go to class for 4.5hrs a night for a week straight. Then go to class 2 full weekends for 8hrs plus the friday before your first friday. So the class was Friday, Sat, Sun, Mon - Fri, Sat and review and test on Sunday!! I know they have other class schedules, But wanted to have it down before the season was on!

So for Schools

Nautical School, Mariners School and Sea school are your best bet. For CPR and First Aid. Its good to know people.. Made getting certified quick and easy. Plus you still need your physical and water time ..Then go to Coast Guard and then get your TWIC card...

Good Luck

Joe

great information Joey.. sorry.. I mean.. CAPT Joey...

How do you prove you boat time?.. or do you have to prove it.

Like I said earlier, I keep talking myself out of it.. but I really want to do it.

Joey... wouldn't it be easier taking the crash course, this way its fresh in your mind when taking the test...  or would it be easier taking the longer course..

Joey, again.. Congrats..  chrz

Nick,

When I say alot of info is presented to you. It's mind blowing how much you have to take in..I think the 3 week schedule is better so you have time to study between classes. The crash course was rough I got home every night around 11:45pm and tried to study and review everything. It would be 2-3am before I crash out . Then got up for work at 6am.. So I was mentally and physically shot out.

Young Gull is doing the 3 week schedule. we talk about how much info you must know and understand. It drains you mentally quickly.

If you do go for the course.. you must know Rules of the Road inside and out... That is were most fail..

As for sea time the Coast Guard application has what is need to qualify for sea time.

When I passed it took a full day to realize and set in what I accomplished!!
