NJ Boating Safty Certificate
« on: May 13, 2008, 10:29:37 PM »
Didn't know until today that I needed one to fish the Manasquan Reservoir with an electric trolling motor.  Unfortunately I didn't have it on me...

Have anyone heard of such a rule.
Fish out of Toms River NJ.

I did not realize it either, but now that you mention it I do recall the wording reads something like "NJBSC required to operate a powerboat"-- so they are calling anything with a motor a powerboat. Also believe now DMV wants you to register your elec trolling motor-powered boat and put on numbers, etc. Don't forget a BOAT endorsement on your driver's license is required ALSO to operate a powerboat in non-tidal waters.

Pretty soon I'll need numbers and a fire x on my canoe...

My grammy had a saying- IT'S TOO MUCH!!!

if you have an electric trolling motor on a log then the log needs to be registered. I remember that one from 16 years ago when I registered my bass boat.

I had no idea about the safety course thing though. last time I was at manasquan res. that was not the case.

In NJ electric is power and counts.  Any boat powered by an electric motor requires a safety cert if you are 13 or older.  Also applies to a 12' boat with under 10HP.  The minimum age for operators of everything else is 16 including PWC's and they need the cert too.  In June of this year everyone born after 1948 will have to have the cert and in June 2009 all operators will have to have it.  Go to this site for answers to many of your questions:
