Jason & I spent the day aboard Capt. Dan's Reel Music with the goal of catching big bass.
After securing 100+ bunkers in the river we made the long but relatively quick trip out front and down the beach to where the captain had favorable reports. Tried a few spots but didn't do much of anything. Moved deeper and started to have run-offs & bluefish bites. Some of the bluefish were following the baits back to the boat & these were some of the biggest bluefish I've seen in a long time. I'm talking bluefish that appeared to be pushing 37+ inchs.
Got some intel that the bass were biting high in the water column so we took off the weights & free lined the bunker. Started to get a few bass run-offs. Not many but enough to keep you interested. I finally landed the first fish of the day a #10 bluefish. Jason had the hot hand as he landed the only 2 bass of the day at #17.5 & #12. I missed my only 2 bass bite of the day & the Capt. missed afew himself. We knew the bass (& big ones at that) were there as the boat that called us in was bailing them (last count they had 15 to #40). We for whatever reason just couldn't get them to bite our baits.
All in all Capt Dan & mate Ed gave it their all & that is all anyone can ask.
Hopefully Jason & I will do some fluking with the Reel Music during the summer and we can redeem ourselves with a couple of doormats.
