The adventures of Gilligan - Saturday June 14
« on: June 14, 2008, 02:10:28 PM »
So all week I'm bummed because I have been reading these awesome reports on a few different forums about catching 30 pounders not too far south of Sandy Hook. I'm bummed because I have a suprise 50th Birthday party to go to on saturday at around 6 pm. So finally I get this bright idea to get up real real early and go fishing. Figured if I got back by 1 or so I would have enough time to catch a nap then shower and go to the party. Call my buddy and he say's he's in. Wake up at 3 and pick the boat up then pick my buddy up at 4 and hit the road. Launch from AH at 5 am and after throwing the net one time and getting enough bunker for my small live we are on our way. well I'm real happy because it was beautiful out and this is the first time I threw the net like an old pro.  Headed around the tip of the hook and down the beach zig zaging my way looking for these so called pods of bunker. Went as far as a mile out and a few miles past the shrewsbury rocks and saw no birds, no bunker. Figued when the slack started moving again things would change. Never happened. Tried trolling X-Raps and Stretch's and also a small bunker spoon . Found some birds just south of the nude beach and played with a few blues. Threw whole live bunker on the bottom but no takers. Not sure what if anything I did wrong but the fishing was just not happening. Oh well, be back at it in a week.  Happy Fathers Day to all you Dad's out there. I'm going to catch some zzzzzz's.

The bass bite was hot on Friday, I'm sure it continued into Saturday, you were probably just in the wrong place at the wrong time. At least you had some action, and couldn't have asked for a nicer day on the water. Better luck next time, you'll hit them.

Good try Mike. I saw one striper at my marina today. That was caught by South Paw Vinnie. I believe it was 39". Didn't hear of any others caught.
I was in the JCAA fluke tourney today and didn't target stripers.

If I had tried to go any further south in my little bay boat I would have knocked a filling or two out of my mouth. By the time I made it to the shrewsbery rocks my back was hurtin. First week of July I'm on vacation at the shore and will be heading out of manasquan inlet and I can guarentee that the bass move further north when that happens. I'm usually a day late and a dollar short...LMAO..but it's all good.

You were close. They are insane down by Asbury. By July you may be better off more north of manasquan. Btw Friday morn my buddy killed them in the rocks. Big ones. But the bunker were heading into the south wind.

That's a good one, I got a small bay boat as well and know right where your comming from.  Trying to put something together for Wednesday. Don't know if I should stick to AH or find a ramp in manasquan. Like you, whichever I choose will be the bad idea.  Sure wish these fish would come into the bay, but they are heading north.
