6/28 The big one(s) that got away...
« on: June 29, 2008, 09:03:26 PM »
Left the Manasquan river club at roughy 5pm for some Birthday fluking, ran into lots of bunker just outside the inlet.  We snagged many and livelined one on a fluke outfit.  I chopped off a head and fished it on the bottom as we drifted throgh the schools. about an hour into fishing, my bunker head gets WHACKED.  drop back, hookset, and she's on.  took about 2 thirds of the line from my fluking Corvalus without looking back.  SNAP.  dang.  when i reeled in my line i foung that my leader had not been long enough and the brute had chafed my 14 lb mono with her tail.  half an hour later, my dad's live bunker got taken.  the fish started to run, hard, but confusion about the drag led to him usign his thumb to slow the run.  SNAP.  That was the end of our hookups, but we did see several fish... mostly over 40 inches... hauled aboard neighboring boats. at around 8:30, the bunker pods collided to make one massive school for acres around the boat.  What a sight to cap of an amazing afternoon on the water.

Nice report. It seems the bass don't get onto the bunker schools till late afternoon. I've gotta give it a try then.  t^

Sorry on the break offs.  All my leader material for the surf is either 30 or 40# Floro.,  nice stuff and pretty abrasion proof to a point.
