07/06-Impromptu Fluke Trip
« on: July 06, 2008, 07:05:25 PM »
Jason and I gathered about 4-5 quarters of fiddler crabs yesterday with the intention of dropping them off today with Capt. Frank Tenore of the Fins On Feathers in Leonardo.

We meet him at his slip alittle before 1 PM this afternoon and he says to us, "hop onboard & let's go kill them something." I turn to my wife who came for the ride and said to her, "it's your call." She must have been feeling gracious because she said go ahead. I definitely owe her one because she drove home and came back at 5 to pick us up.

On to the fishing. Not sure if it was because of the weather, overcast with a NE wind or because of fuel prices but I was shocked to see how empty the bay was on a summer Sunday on a holiday weekend no less. Tried a piece over by Romer's for sea bass but after 20 minutes with not even a bite for any us we decided to go fluking. Repeated the same drift atop the Knoll and were into fluke everytime. From micros up to 22"s (which I caught  ;D). Hot bait was Peruvian spearing. The fluke just jumped all over them. Once those ran out we used just belly strips (sea robin & shark) and continued to catch. By 4:30 we (4 anglers total) had 17 keepers on ice and probably released twice as many released.

Sounds like a good trip, and a good keeper ratio to boot, good report too.
