MONSTER BLACK DRUM OFF SEABRIGHT
« on: July 06, 2008, 10:10:55 AM »
Yesterday morning my buddy John travled out by himself in his 16 foot aluminum boat. About a mile off Seabright he incountered a giant school of black drum. From a distance he thought it was just bunker swirling the surface, until he got there. He saw huge fins breaking the surface then explosions on the ever presant bunker. His first cast with a live bunker he hooked up. Only to have his reel smoked and line broken off. He then switched to a heavier set up. Now realizing he was in the middle of the largest school of black drum he ever heard of.The first catch took him a half hour to land this monster and get it in the boat by himself, the second one was not as long of a fight. The third one tired and exhausted he released at the boat. He then brought these monster to my house to be weighed, the smaller one bent the hook on my 60lb scale, keeping us from using that scale. So we did the math. Lenght *girth*girth divided by 800, and we came up with one being 86# at 49 inches and the other was 68# at just over 50 inches. These fish were on the surface exploding on bunker, and was an experience he will never for get.

Give a man a fish, and he can eat for a day. But teach a man how to fish, and he'll be dead of mercury poisoning inside of three years.

Very cool.

They are also getting them right off of or in sandy Hook.

May have to target them next week.

Saw a number of carcasses (and whole fish) floating back in keyport.

Some fool(s) is catching them and just dumping them.

Nice catch. I have heard of some catches in the Sandy Hook area as well.

They are supposedly good to eat, but you only get a little bit of meat in relation to their size.

 w0w  That's awesome!

Do you think it's possible that people are catching them by accident on tackle that's just too light for the job?

If you fight any fish longer than what should be necessary, and to the point of exhaustion, it will probably die soon after being released. :-\

Just a thought.

Bob, I heard the dead fish were floating at the docks in Sandy Hook. Not a matter of a stressed fish, but idiot fishermen.  >:(
