Crabbing Report

Second hand.. tons and tons of crabs.  This guy I know caught 3 dozen large males off the dock at the Outfitters pier.  He claims that its the best season he has seen in a very long time.

Went Sunday by the matoloking bridge.  Only got a few in about an hour and half. Enough for a small snack. Barely keepers though.
Previous week had better numbers, but still barely keepers.

im going to get the 14" lake boat ready for the crabbing.  I can't miss out on a good crab season as they are my all time favoriate food.

want to try it myself within the next week,like to use just drop lines,we were talking about crabbing a few weeks ago,friend telling me about a guy walking in the water at night and netting them but he was also using a light which is illegal because it attracts them,was caught by co,received a warning and let him keep his crabs,also mentioned that he heard it's illegal to use raw chicken for bait due to salmonella,anybody hear about this?

Dock Outfitters has a sign at the dock, something about not to use chicken because it harms the bay.  No mention as to how though.

I think Mark has it right.  They want you to buy bunker for bait.  They can't stop you from using chicken as that dock was built and maintained by Seaside Park.  Unless I am told differently and I have asked, they have no say in the matter unless it has the seal of SSP on the sign.

I'm not sure how using raw chicken might harm the bay.  But, I don't think its a good idea for kids  to be handling uncooked chicken.  Especially after its been laying out in the sun for awhile.  Unless they are thoroughly scrubbing their hands after touching it, they are definitely going to expose themselves to possible Salmonella poisoning. :-X

And you know these kids aren't washing after every time they touch the chicken.  More likely they're going to bait the trap and then grab a handful of chips or a sandwich and stick their fingers in their mouths. :P

When I ran the B&T we thought about selling  chicken parts for bait, but decided against it for that reason.  We didn't want to see anyone get sick.

I agree.. Crabs eat almost anything, there is no need to use raw chicken when you have bunker and fish scraps.

Your right there is no need, but people have been using it for years, I dont think the guy at Dock Outfitters will make many people change there mind. I use bunker but when I was little, my parents would always use chicken in the cages.
