Fought the fog all day 7-6
« on: July 06, 2008, 07:32:36 PM »
Arrived at the boat only to find a very heavy fog. Waited around a while for the fog to lift.

Made a phone call to a dock mate who was out on the water and was told that the fog was lifting and he had a mile or more visibility and it was getting better. Decided to make the trip out.

Got to the inlet and the fog was still there. Thank the Lord for radar. Motored to the inlet buoy and found a large pod of bunker. Floated along with the bunker for a while. Snagged some and sent them adrift. We all (three onboard today) got hammered by big blues. Kept two for the box.

Put some fluke rods out but caught only shorts, along with doggies and skates.

Had boats running thru the fog like it was non-existent. Had a few come close and they made a sharp turn when they saw us. Has the fog signal going most of the day, didn't hear many other boats blasting their horns.  5hrug Not only a regulation, but a major safety issue.

Will try again tomorrow. I hope the weather is better than today.

the doggies are getting out of control lately, we had to leave fluke cause they were killing our hooks and bait

Good report Joe, at least you had some action with big blues.

Amazing how some inept boaters run their boats through fog and through no wake areas. Radar is a lifesaver, but not much of a help if a boater is running his boat hard in the fog towards you and he doesn't have it.

Yeah, radar is a lifesaver. I am constantly watching it. In and out of the cabin all day.

When it is foggy out, I typically leave the motor running. You can hear a boat's motor from a distance. I can see on the radar if a boat is aimed my way and will move if the boat does not turn off.  t^

Some guys need to take the boaters safety course several time and some need to stay on shore. I have a 16' Sea Nymth and I have guys go by me at full speed no more 30 yards away. I don't know if they think that I don't belong on the water with a boat like that, it is a safe boat if everyone uses some common sense. Play it safe you are not the only one out there.

There is nothing more nerve racking than sitting in the Fog hearing some A**Hole running wide open and seeing them heading for you on the radar.........

When we are out in the fog I am not only watching the radar, but my head is spinning around looking for danger.....never can relax in those conditions.....

my neighbor John who goes out with me stopped by this morning to see when I'm going out again.he was down long branch fishing from a jetty yesterday and he said the visibility with the fog was very poor, yet he could see boats coming by him hugging the shore ,but not slowing down,he said it's wonder somebody didn't hit something.the only horns he heard were party boats when they blast to start fishing or pickup.it makes me nervous if there's no visibility,I'm a fair weather fisherman,if I can't see I'm not going.good report and effort on your part  t^also John had 3 keeper fluke but was losing the bigger ones because he had to get them thru the rip.

In conditions like that, and when out in the canyons, I'll set up a dual perimeter with my radar. If anything goes through the first perimeter the radar sets off a loud annoying alarm... gets me right to the screen to double check... in fog I'll use 1 mile and 1/2 mile perimeter. In the canyons on a busy night it's usually impossible to go larger that a 1/4 mile and 1/8th as the inner perimeter...

It can literally be a life saver...
