Barnegat Bay 7/15

3 shorts lost 2. Around BI. Squid and spearing
Will fluke follow bait to the surface? When I retrieve I usually do it slow. Twice it was followed and they were to wide to be anything but fluke. Just never saw them do that before. What type of leader do you folks use?  grtn

Fluke will most definitely follow a bait to the surface, at least in shallower water, I've seen it many times in Barnegat Bay and the Manasquan River.

Many times, fishing the channel edge of the Manasquan River, my daughter would get bored with fluke fishing, and put a killie on with no weight to try for a cocktail blue, and she'd get fluke after fluke that way. Water is about 8-9 feet deep in that area, meaning the fluke were spotting it from the bottom and coming up and taking it.

In the Bay and River, I use a Mustad #92553 hook, size 1/0 and a 36 inch 12 LB mono leader. I'm a firm believer that fluke in high pressure fishing areas are line/leader shy.

Nice report Frank.

I had a fluke follow my rig to the surface from 30' of water today. Hit is about 5' from the top. Didn't get a hook into it.
